I felt as if my knees were going to crumble beneath me. Not only had I lost all hope in saving my best friend in the last few seconds, but I had lost hope in saving myself. If Lily didn't get out of this unscathed, then I would loose a piece of the life I had fought so hard to keep intact years ago. 

And just looking forward into Lucas' eyes made my stomach twist in horror. I couldn't believe he was willing to throw her away, like she was garbage. And then there was my brother, standing across from me with a look of pain in his eyes, he could barely cover with a scowl. I knew he didn't want to leave Lily like this, but without Lucas, he couldn't afford to save us both. 

In seconds, I felt my vision start to cloud up and burn with unshed tears as I watched Lily look desperately at Lucas.

"I made a mistake!" She screamed, sickening fear lacing through to her eyes."It isn't all my fault! Don't punish me for the decision we both made!"

Lucas visibly flinched at her words, and I couldn't help but feel my heart drop down to my stomach. When the room fell silent, I could definitely feel a shift in the air.

My captors arms quickly tightened around me, his voice booming through the cafeteria."Enough of this bullshit! It's not even worth it for damaged goods. Jim," he looked over at the man behind me, holding Lily,"grab the check."

I could see the muscle in Jason's jaw tense. "Not before we get Evie back."

The man holding me tightened his grip even more, causing me to suck in a wavering breath. "Who's the one calling the shots here? Pass over the check, I want fifty grand. Nothing less."

Lucas didn't hesitate in throwing over the check he'd just grabbed from Jason. I could see the desperation in his eyes as he outstretched his hand towards the man holding me."Take it, just give her back." He said, his voice cracking as he noticed my tear-streaked face.

'Jim' quickly reached out, grabbing the small piece of paper without hesitation. He made sure to go over the numbers quickly before nodding to Mr. Evil Leader Kidnapper Guy.

The man holding me looked back over to Jason and Lucas."You must be idiots." He spoke his voice deadly calm.

If it weren't for the soul crushing disappointment I'd felt, I probably would've face-palmed. 

Really?

"I am a man of my word though." He spoke, bringing everyone's attention back to him. "So I'll do you one better."

Before I could even register what was happening, Lily was being pushed forward towards Jason and Lucas, who completely ignored her as she was thrown to their feet like trash.

The man continued."This lovely girl here just sacrificed herself to save a friend in need. I believe it is my duty as a dedicated 'people-catcher' to drop the chick who wasn't worth fighting for, for the one worth fifty grand."

Lucas looked as if he was about to murder someone, his entire body shaking with pure rage.

I let my eyes wander Lily who still lay in a heap on the floor, attempting to keep her sobs as silent as possible. 

It was at this moment that I realized that I was angry. Like, really angry. Why had I even bothered helping? My friend had betrayed me before in the worst way possible, and I still continued to throw away what mattered most to me to keep her happy.

She couldn't even stand up and try to figure out how to solve the situation. Maybe I was being unfair, thinking that she would bounce back as quickly as I would in her shoes, and I'd probably regret what bitterness I felt now as I looked at her at her absolute worst. But I couldn't help but let the fire burning in my heart grow for the first time in a year. I simply couldn't stop my heart as it crumbled into absolute soul-shattering nothingness in my chest.

"Time to go Sweet Cheeks." I heard Mr. Kidnapper Guy say before a smoke bomb went off, spreading a toxic fog all throughout the cafeteria. Immediately following with a hard object being bashed against the back of my scull, bringing on a darkness that didn't compare to the one I'd felt in my broken heart.

Super late update, I am soooooo sorry. I've just lacked inspiration, but I've finally whipped my ass into gear to produce an Incredibly short chapter.
