AS I LAY on my bed working on my math homework, my phone pings with a message from Kenzie.
Kenzie: Can I swing by?
Me: Sure.
I send off the text and message her a map with my address. In a matter of minutes, she's ringing the front doorbell. I stamp my way down the stairs and let her in and then we march back to my room.
"What are you up to?" She asks, flopping down on my bed after her bag has been layed by the door. "Just working on some math homework." I shrug. "To what do I owe this visit?" I ask. "I was bored, so I figured why not hang out with you. How did day one of your secret relationship go?" She asks. "So you came here for gossip?" I say pointedly, knowing her all to well. "Gossip that relates to your well-being. C'mon. Don't leave me hanging." She whines. "Fine. Fine. Well, our secret relationship is not so secret anymore." I inform her.
Kenzie begs for details and so I fill her in on the afternoon's events. "Yikes." She says as my phone pings with a new message. "Speak of the devil. It's Luke." I chuckle, picking up my phone to read the message.
Luke: Since you're an expert on relationships. Wanna give me some advice?
"He wants relationship advice." I say, a weird look on my face. He's never expressed interest in a girl or wanting a relationship until now. "Ooh. Fun! I want to help!" Kenzie beams. We both lean over my phone screen as I type out a reply.
Me: Um...okay?
Luke: There's this girl. Becca. I kind of like her and I want to ask her out, but we don't talk much...
"Do you know a Becca?" I ask, turning to Kenzie.
"I do. Rebecca Mason. Becca for short. She's on the squad. I don't really talk to her much either. I didn't think she would be Luke's type though." She shrugs.
"You already pegged all the guys' types?"
"Oh yeah, for sure. Ian would most likely go for an outgoing girl to balance out his shy personality, someone who likes the spotlight so he can take lots of pictures of her. I pegged Forrest as the type who likes superficial girls based on his previous relationship with Merissa but apparently I was wrong about that since he's dating you now. Luke I figured would go for someone like you but I guess him and Forrest did a little switch-a-roo with their predicted types."
"And Tyson?" I ask, wondering if she's figured him out yet.
"I have absolutely no idea. That boy is complicated with a capital 'C'. My best guess would be that he would go for any girl with a beating heart. The definition of a guy who doesn't want to be tied down. And since he's both attractive and funny, he can get basically any girl he wants."
"What about you? Could he get you to go on a date with him?"
"No way. I'm so done with the righteous athletes. He's a great guy to joke around with but I'm not sure if he's boyfriend material. At least not for me."
"He was asking about you at lunch, you know."
"He asks about a lot of girls. That's how he is. Now, can we please get back to the matter at hand?" Kenzie says, gesturing to my phone screen.
Me: Kind of? This seems to be coming out of nowhere.
Luke: I could say the same about you and Forrest.
Me: True. True. So, what do you want me to do exactly?
Luke: Teach me how to get a girlfriend.
"He's straight to the point. I like it." Kenzie acknowledges approvingly. "Don't you dare get a crush on my best friend." I warn her. "I would never. You don't have to worry about me." She laughs. We devise a plan on how to get Luke a girlfriend and then we text him the first step.
