Note this chapter picks up from the end of chapter 7 with Miles Quaritch

On the way back to his rooms, after getting his assignments and books from the bitch of a scientist, Miles started thinking.

He would say he is above average in intelligence and would, without a second thought, use his knowledge to his advantage, as any reasonable person should do. When Miles was first assigned to the Avatar program, he knew he needed to design a plan. His ultimate end goal being to attain the highest position he could. But Miles had a small problem.

His personality wasn't anything to boast about, too brash and tenacious- often, people back on earth said they couldn't stand how arrogant he is. To win the attention and affections of the people on the base, he needed to warp himself into a desirable and unforgettable asset. He needed to cater to the lowlifes around him, being helpful and considerate, but firm and have a standup moral character.

There were only a couple of people who had seen his true colors so far, the two blasted lab coat, but it was nothing he couldn't workaround. He would paint himself as the most convincing and alluring character in the play and bend the people around him to fit his desires.

With his new goal now in mind, Miles came upon his door. Immediately a scowl took over his face as he looked down into his arms. The books looked drool, and Miles started regretting his decision in life. With a soft exhale of air, he opened the door to his room and began his tortuous journey to becoming an Avatar Driver.

3 months later*

Miles huffed out a breath of silent frustration as he looked at his calendar. He was to meet with the bane of his existence today. Both of them.

He had his biweekly 'quiz' with Augustine. She used the time to torture him and try to break his new façade of the humble and helpful, perfectly composed military personal. After which, he would meet with the loon of a doctor, who generally just grated on Miles nerves as Woor just stared at him the whole time with twinkly eyes. God even thinking the word twinkly deducted man points.

However, thank all that there is, this would be the last checkup with Mr. Twinkle toes, and Miles dearly hoped that he would never have to interact with the man again. On the other hand, he would not be able to escape from the insufferable know-it-all that was Augustine. Her he was stuck with for the foreseeable future.

Quickly he walked to his small bathroom and splashed water onto his face as he continued to scowl. Wishing the water would wash away all the agitations in his life. After he finished wiping off the water with a towel, he caught his reflection in the mirror.

With a sneer, he started observing himself. The scars were almost completely healed, only slightly red around the edges. His hair had grown out some, starting to curl softly around the edges, but the dark brown was interrupted on one side where the three scars continued into his hairline. To be honest, it gave him a more intimidating look, and some of the men he talked to mentioned that the girls on the base said it gave him an attractive edge.

With another scoff, he pushed away from his position, leaning on the sink and stalked back into his room. It was sparse, devoid of any personal belongings besides that bare necessities, and he preferred it that way. He checked the clock and decided it was time to start the day.

Walking down the halls, he nodded at the people he passed, making sure to give off friendlier vibes so as not to intimidate everyone. Of course, he was no pansy, he needed to be strong and dignified, someone to look up to, but at the same time, be approachable. It was a hard balance to maintain.

Soon he came upon Augustines office and rapped upon the door. He heard her tell-tale grunt of acquiescing and pushed open the door.

Augustine was hunched over her table, diligently scribbling some crap in a notebook and not even looking up when Miles entered. She just grunted out a quiet command to sit and continued to scratch for the next five minutes as Miles waited patiently for her acknowledgment.
