Heart remembers, mind forgets

2015

"Dashi—"

"Miss, hindi ako si Dashi."

"No, you are my Dashi."

He looked at the woman in front of him, unbelievably. He was irritated when this woman blocked his way and called him by the name that was very far from his name, Renzo. The woman even insisted that he was hers. He stopped when he heard the word my.

"Miss, nagkakamali ka lang. My name is Renzo. Renzo Salvador."

The woman shook her hand and with a pained expression, she said, "Your heart remembers but your mind always forgets. I am your greatest love, Dashi. I carry your heart like how you carry mine."

Renzo wanted to laugh but he just couldn't, seeing the woman's expression. It was very ungentlemanly for him to laugh at this woman's distress. He calmed himself and tried to look polite, genuinely polite. He still couldn't believe that a stranger could say these things to him.

"Miss, I am not your Dashi. Matagal mo na siguro siyang hindi nakikita kaya napagkakamalan mong ako siya." He looked at her face again. She was not smiling and pain was still visible on her face.

"Your heart remembers me, Dashi. Come closer." Seirra reached for him but he stepped backward, as if she was disgusting. "Please."

Seirra, with an obvious admiration, looked at the man that she had loved for years. The look on his face made her heart broke into pieces. He used to look at me with so much love and respect. Where is the love now? His face was still the same, still the same brownish-black hair that matched his black mysterious eyes, and still the same elegantly arched eyebrows that she truly missed.

Seirra wanted to close her eyes and feel his presence, just feel. The way he looked at her brought back all the pain she felt every time he leaves. He looked at her as if she were a stranger, and not his wife. But she was afraid the moment she closed her eyes, he would just vanish and it will took many years before seeing hin again.

Renzo couldn't stand the look on her face. The woman's eyes were very expressive. And he knew at that moment...she was in agony.

"Miss, hindi kita kilala. Ngayon lang tayo nagkita. Hindi ako ang hinahanap mo, hindi ako si Dashi."

He was about to leave when she stopped him by holding his wrist very tight. She was looking at his hand before looking at his face, looking at his eyes directly.

"Do you have a birthmark on your left thigh?" Renzo did not answer. He thought this might be a trick. "Answer me, Mister."

"Yes."

She stared at him again for a minute, without losing her grip. "A heart-shaped birthmark?"

Renzo's eyes widened in disbelief and in embarrassment. "H-How did you know?"

The woman showed a faint smile, "Because you are my Dashi, Mister. I am your wife."

"What the hell?" He muttered in confusion. He didn't believe her but some part of him wanted to. Who is this woman? Bakit niya sinasabing asawa niya ako?

He was still staring at her when she removed her necklace and handed it to him. It was an antique bloodstone necklace.

"This is the necklace you gave me on our fiftieth wedding anniversary."

50th? I am only 25 and she looks a little bit younger, he thought.

"This might help you remember me." Seirra did her best to give the man a smile. "I will see you again, Dashi."

That was the last thing she said before she turned her back at him. She did not glance back because she didn't want him to see her tears.
