Chapter Fourteen

My original three best were Mayday, Fly away and Monody but I've listened to them so many times so I don't liek them now (although fly away is still noice)

I decide to save Jake on my own.

The others will be no help. The dean and the teachers are too busy with responding to the UN and the CIA and controlling the activity around Houston. The others are waiting for the dean to arrange a rescue.

The second night after Jake was taken, I sneak out of my dorm and creep down the corridor. Suddenly, the door to Christoph's room open and I find a tired Christoph standing there.

"Christoph! What are you doing ere awake? It's the dead of night!" I say in surprise.

"What are you doing awake in the dead of night? I knew you were going to try this sooner or later. You can't go, Audrey."

"I know you're right," I say sheepishly. "It's just..."

"Shhh!" Christoph whispers and whisks me into his room. It's painted a baby blue, with posters of the sea and the sky on the walls. "You have a crush on him, don't you?"

I start to say no, but something stops me.

"Come on, you can tell me," Christoph says.

"I don't know," I say. It's the truth. Sure, I have feelings for Jake, but they aren't deep enough for that. And also, we can't have emotional entanglements that are so deep...

Christoph stands up. "Tell you what, Audrey. You're no help to the mission in this condition. We're going to save Jake. If we succeed, then Jake is rescued. If we don't, then you have to accept the fact that you tried but he's going to be there for a while."

A flicker of hope appears in my soul. "Okay."

"Come out," Christoph says. "No hiding."

Ally, Benjamin and Timothy come in the room from outside sheepishly.

"Hey!" Ally says. "How did you find us?"

"I have my own ways," says Christoph. But I spot a computer showing live footage of the corridor.

Christoph notices that I noticed (A.N. and then Ally notices that Christoph noticed that I noticed JK), winks and me and mouths for me to stay quiet.

The five of us sneak of the school with nobody noticing and steal a jeep.

It's easy to get over the army forces. It's a dark night with a bit of light trickling from the moon, thus making our shadows pale and hard to see among the dark, although it takes quite an effort to slip into our shadows and overcome the pain that comes with this big exertion. Ally sneaks into a mirror and meets us on the other end of the army surrounding Houston.

Christoph, who can only move around in his shadow while frozen, diverts the guards' attention by firing a gun and knocking the soldiers that come to investigate unconscious with just a rock in each hand. He slips through the army disguised as a soldier and makes his way to us.
