This Year

Chapter 7

"Liza, LIZA! Calm down."
"No! Who are you people?!"
She picked up a pipe and started to swing. I jumped to the back and tackled her to the seat.
"STOP!" I screamed, getting her hand away from the weapons.
"Who are you!?" She spat in my face. " I only know Zeus! ZEUS HELP ME!"
Zeus stared back at me.
"It's okay, stay there." I said nodding to him.
"Liza, you know all of us. I know you." Tears started to form in my eyes.
"Liza, it's okay. They are friends." Zeus said, trying to keep his eyes on the road.
"Z-Zeus? What happened?" She said crying.
I climbed off of her, making sure not to harm anyone.
"You were bitten. And we cured you. I- It must've changed your memory as a side effect." Zeus stuttered and shook from the front.
"Zeus." I said quietly.
"Y-Yeah?" He whispered, his voice still shaking a bit.
"Let me drive. Finish talking to Liza, please." I slightly smiled.
"Okay."
He stopped the car and we switched seats. Zeus told Liza everything that had happened before, including our names.
"H-How did I forget all of that?" Liza spoke looking down.
"The vaccine must have a few flaws." Gwen spoke out.
"But, it didn't do that to me?" I questioned Gwen.
"Avery, there is something I need to tell you." Gwen said hesitantly.
"W-What?" I spoke softly.

"Avery, you never turned. I didn't even inject you with the vaccine. You just, you just. It just never happened." Gwen stuttered.
"Y-You mean, I- I'm immune?" I spoke wide eyed.
But before I could get an answer, the truck sped out of control and hit a tree.

I woke up to the sound of gun shots and groaning. As I looked around I realized that I was no longer in the truck, but I front of it. The windshield had a massive hole in it.
"I must've flown through it." I said holding my arm. "It's broken. Shit."

"Avery? Avery!" A young girls voice spoke to the left of me.
"H-Hannah?" I shook.
"No, it's me Liza."
"Liza?"
"Yeah, let's get you back to the others."
"O-Okay."

"Have you seen Josh or Hope?" Zeus asked as we walked into a small building that looked to be a drug store.
"N-No. Why?" Liza asked looking around.
"They haven't returned." He said making a disappointed face.

"I'm going to look for them!" Sage said running outside. But before she got anywhere Zeus told her to take someone. She chose me and Liza.
"Can I get my arm wrapped up first?" I asked wiggling it around like a weird fish.
"Yeah, I found a sling over in one of the back rooms." Liza said smiling.
"Thanks." I put my arm into the sling and stood up. "Let's go."

"What happened back there?" I asked Liza.
"You had just found out that you don't need medicine." Liza said looking at her bite scars.
"Medicine for what?" I asked. I must have hit my head pretty bad back there.
"You don't need medicine if you get infected, you're immune. As Gwen put it." Liza said making a dopey face.

"Will you guys hurry up!" Sage said walking a few feet ahead of us.
"Yeah, yeah we're coming." Liza giggled.

"So, if I get bit.. I don't turn?" I questioned.
"I guess not." She shrugged her shoulders.

"Uhm, you guys might want to come and see this!" Sage yelled standing over a cliff.
Liza and I ran to see what she was talking about. When we arrived, all there was to be seen was disaster.

"T-They, they just. They." Sage failed to Dinah her sentence as she fell to her knees.
"They jumped." Liza spoke quietly, taking a seat next to Sage.
Panic and sadness wiped across all of our faces.
"B-but why?" Sage cried out.
"I-I don't know." Liza said trying to comfort her.
"What now, what do we say to the others?" Sage panicked.

I stood there, silence had taken over my body like a disease.
"We leave."
