"You're gonna regret this!" I yell after Markam.
Markam is my best friend of five years. The thing we have in common? We're both orphans no parents, both on our own.
Well not entirely, we live in an orphanage that shelters us. But let's be honest who wants us there? You may be saying that we should be grateful to have a roof above our heads and yadah yadah, but the thing is we're the odd ones out. ADHD doesn't help either, always awake and moving.
Our neighbourhood is quite big compared to the number of people. It always seems like winter never passes but no one seems to mind it. No one expect me. I could go for some nice rain with some thunder. It just seems so soothing with all the bright lightning booming across the sky.
The closest that gives me delight is the colours. Ever since I arrived here this area has been decorated with bright warm colours like red and orange. But the withering trees kind of take it away.
Right now, Markam just threw a water-balloon on my head. While it's snowing. Harsh, huh?
I chase after him right around the corner when something collides with me making me trip and fall face-first to the ground. It's someone I haven't seen here before. He's taller and bulkier than any of the other men here but something seems off about him. He's smoking and wearing a brown leather jacket and sunglasses that are so dark I am pretty sure no one can see through them. He doesn't even give any attention, walks right by me.
"A sorry would be nice!" I say just loud enough for him to hear.
He immediately turns back and comes towards me. He takes out his cigarette and whispers to me, "Watch that mouth of yours, Girlie, never know when it could land you in trouble." Something about his voice sounded off. It kind of sounds like he's talking through his throat.
I see Markam coming out the corner.
"Hey Eirini, what happened got tired? I knew that chicken sandwich was too-" he stops and looks at the man. He's frightened. He picks me up and doesn't even bother to dust me off. He just says, "Let's go." and I don't object, cause that dude already scared my guts out.
I know I didn't see clearly, but I swear that that man had one eye.
We start running and don't look back. Thinking about that man just gave me the heebie-jeebies.
Our Orphanage is comparatively big. It was formed during the 1980s so its basically like a smaller Hogwarts. Large Off-white pillars, Dyed decorative glasses and has no strict rules.
But a kinder caretaker wouldn't hurt. Miss Fita like a modernized beast with glasses. Scratch the no rules. She's like all the worst teachers you ever had moulded into one.
All the other children here are all the same. They're forced to follow her, listen to her every word, but we know that no one likes her, we're just the only ones who show it.
We walk into the library and sit down. I can see Miss Fita eyeing us in suspicion.
I look at Markam, he seems to be in deep thought. I wonder If he's thinking about the man. One way to find out.
I take a book from the shelves and place it in front of my mouth so no one can see me talking. "Have you seen him before?"
"Quiet," Miss Fita says from across the room. Damn it, I was never good at whispering.
"No, Eir," he answers bluntly. That's strange, I normally can't get him to shut up but now he's quiet as a mouse.
"Then why did you look at him like that?" I ask, trying to get some answers out of him.
Before he can say anything, I see Miss Fita hovering above me.
"I think you've earned yourself an early bedtime, Ms Eirini."

She turns off the lights in my room and closes the door as she leaves. I hear her footsteps walk away. Normally the girls and boys have share rooms with the same gender but because of our ADHD Markam and I share one room.
I know there's no point in waiting for him, cause he takes forever to eat. And I'm pretty sure she put a camera in my room after all my 'mishaps', so there is no point in getting up.
So I have no choice but to fall asleep.

I see myself but realize this isn't me, it's some manned up version of me in armour. I look down and see Markam in my hands. Dead.
"You could have saved him. You could have saved them all."
