[Song of the Chapter: i wanna be your girlfriend by girl in red]

Max grabbed an empty bottle of Coke off of El's nightstand, a snakes and ladders board from her shelf and some sheets of yellow paper and a pen from her desk before sitting down on the bed. El sat on the bed with her and listened tentatively as Max explained her game.

"Okay, so what if we put a bunch of names of people we know on pieces of paper and spin the bottle until it lands on a name. Whoever it lands on we see if we can see what they're doing, like we did with the boys. But we'll only do it if you're okay with it, I don't want to push you"

El remembered how funny and how exciting it was to spy on the boys, she was also reassured by the fact that Max wasn't pushing her to do it. Max made El feel really empowered like she was finally her own person making her own choices. If she wanted to go shopping, she could go shopping; if she wanted to change up her style, she could change up her style; if she wanted to break up with Mike, she could break up with Mike; and if she wanted to use her powers for fun, she could use her powers for fun. That was the great thing about Max, she never forced her to do anything, she never tried to control her, she just inspired her to do what she wanted to do. It was one of the main reasons she liked her so much.

"Let's do it"

"Cool!"

Max started writing random names on the piece of paper and tearing them up into their own separate pieces. The names she chose were; Mr Clarke, Billy, Mrs Wheeler, Dustin (since he wasn't with the other boys for some reason), Mr Wheeler, Steve, and Nancy.

"Holy shit I can't believe we're really doing this", Max said with excitement and disbelief.

She was with a real-life superhero and she was going to use her real-life powers. El was the epitome of a badass female superhero, like someone straight out of a comic book. It was one of the reasons she was in complete admiration of the girl, why she liked her so much.

"Ready?", she asked El

"Ready"

El spun the bottle. They both watched it spin round and round until it landed on

"Mr Wheeler", they both said in unison

Max grimaced, "ugh, boring", she laughed slightly afterwards. She regretted putting the option in the mix.

"Yeah, boring", El mimicked and laughed a little too.

"Spin again", Max laughed

El smiled and went to spin again but stopped herself. She remembered what Max said when she was explaining the game earlier, they had to spy on whoever it landed on. She looked up at Max, concerned that she was playing it wrong.

"Against the rules?", she asked.

Max didn't miss a beat, "we make our own rules"

They caught each other's eye for a second. When Eleven looked at Max, she thought about all that had happened in the last twenty-four hours. Going to the mall, flipping off the receptionist, exploding the girl's drink, kissing Max, and using her powers to spy on the boys; was all against the rules. The rules were made by Hopper and Mike and the regular people. But it didn't matter because it was allowed in their rules, Eleven and Max's rules. They didn't have to listen to anyone else, all that mattered was what they thought.

Max realized what she had just said and contemplated it for a second. She was so certain that they could do whatever they wanted, that they shouldn't be held down by men and the society that was dominated by them. But if she was so certain that they could make their own rules and that she liked El so much, why did being El's girlfriend scare her so much. She thought she was over what happened in California, her family and what happened with Jess. Maybe it was affecting her more than she thought.
