Chapter 14 - Code Red

"Do you copy? This is a code red"

Max nuzzled her face into the back of El's neck in hopes that she could drown out the annoying sound of Lucas' voice over the radio.

"I repeat, this is a code red. Max, do you copy?"

Max soon realized that he wasn't going to stop. She groaned as she rolled over and snatched the radio from off the ground.

"This is a code red"

El rolled over too and poked her head up to see what was going on, wondering why her waist was suddenly cold and she could no longer feel Max's embrace.

"Shut up!", Max said harshly into the radio as she slammed the antenna down and switched it off.

She sighed a breath of relief and turned back over to return to her sleep. El too allowed her head to flop back onto the bed as she wiggled her way back into Max's arms. Just as Max felt herself drifting back to sleep, the phone in her bedroom started to ring.

"You've got to be kidding me", she scoffed in annoyance as she angrily threw the covers off herself and marched sleepily over to the phone.

"I'm sleeping! Go away!"

"This is Mike. Do not hang up", she and Mike didn't really get on. If he was calling her it must be serious, "something happened, something bad. Our very lives could be at stake"

"What are you talking about?"

"Just come over to my house. We'll explain everything"

El lazily popped her head up again to see why Max sounded so worried.

"What?", Max was super confused by why they were supposedly in danger.

"Hurry"

Mike hung up and Max was left staring blankly at the phone.

"What did he say?", El asked from the warmth and comfort of the bed.

Max turned around, looking terrified, "we've gotta go"

She opened her closet and pulled out the first outfit she saw.

"Go where?"

"Mike's house. He says we're in danger"

Without even thinking, Max whipped off her shirt so that she was stood in her night bra. El's eyes widened slightly and she turned away, blushing, really not sure how to react in this situation. Max threw on another shirt and took a quick break from changing to grab one of El's outfits from a shopping bag that she'd accidentally left at Max's house after their trip to the mall. Max threw the clothes onto the bed next to Eleven.

"Come on El, we've got to hurry"

Max continued to change as El stood up, facing away from her, and slowly got changed herself. When they were done they went to the kitchen, Max grabbed two bananas and gave one to El. They quickly ate them before rushing through the front door and hopping onto Max's bike.

"Sorry that wasn't the best breakfast", Max said as she was peddling towards Mike's house.

"It's okay. We had to be quick and get to Mike's"

"True. It sounded pretty urgent...but I still wish I was spending time with you instead"

"We are spending time together"

"Well yeah but that's not what I meant. I meant that I wish we were spending time together, just you and me, doing something fun. Right now we're on our way to meet up with the boys and deal with something life-threatening. It's not exactly the fun, romantic thing I had planned to do with my girlfriend-"
