_You knew I was home_

You hated to cry, too bad you did it all the time. Maybe all these rollercoasters of emotions started when you decided to move back to your old town. It was a very populated area so you weren't always going to see the same person. You dreaded the idea of coming back home but here you are... At a gas station, working your ass off to pay off those awful classes you failed. Such a shame really, you hated seeing yourself as a 26 year old college drop out only to end up at a dead end job that makes you work night shifts.

It's been about a month or so since you've come back to this old place you've grown to dislike so much. You had promised yourself five years ago that you would never come back, however you still ended up back in this pit of a town. Breaking promises once more you find yourself unsurprised.

Sighing, you slouched in your stool leaning on the top of the check out counter. It was hard to stay awake. You weren't allowed to be on your phone while waiting behind the register, so your next best option was to read through a magazine and doodle on it. Scribbling in peoples faces for your own entertainment.

". . ."

This sucks. What time is it? You looked down at the watch on your wrist. It's hand slowly ticking away "2:33am" you wanted to tear your hair out. You had a lot of hours ahead of you. You contemplated on grabbing a cup of coffee later. Maybe that'll keep you awake? Jeez, this was almost as bad as trying to stay awake in class back in high school. Yawning one last time your attention was suddenly caught by the sound of the glass door's electric bell ringing.

Your watery eyes lazily looked over at the glass door. You rose a brow realizing no one was there. You look back down at your magazine, your hand mindlessly scribbling as you wondered if it was the wind that had pushed the door open.

"Must be really windy tonight." You mumbled to yourself. After a minute of tiredly staring at your magazine your eyes once again looked away and examined the store one more time. But the sight of someone caused you to become stiff.

It was a skeleton.

Your mouth fell agape as you felt you're heart begin to pump out as much blood as possible, the beating of your anxious heart raced against your ribs. Y-You knew this monster! But you didn't expect him to shop here!! Why was he here?? You were so caught off guard and so lost in thought that you hadn't realized you had impulsively dropped to the floor, hiding behind the counter in quivering shame.

Although the gas station was insanely cold your body had become unbearably hot. Your tongue felt swollen from the anxiety you were currently enduring. Your shaken eyes looked up at the tv hanging above you.

It had four split screens. The gas station wasn't big but you could see every corner of the store. You watched him in camera two. You could feel your stomach twist in what was pure anxiety. Your chest felt so heavy that you might as well have forgotten how to breath.

The small monster stood in front of the hot dog oven watching sausages spin around and around. He seemed genuinely entertained by it. You flinched seeing the monster's head look over at the slushie machine. Red and blue ice swirled in a hypnotizing circle. He was chuckling to himself. You could only see his back; your heart skipped a beat when he had finally turned his head a little, revealing his face to you through the camera.

You gulped. You hadn't seen this face in literal years. He still looked like the same skeleton you had met all those years ago. Big blue sweater, black and white basketball shorts, a permanent—shit eating grin, everything looked the same, except... different? You couldn't exactly tell what was so different about the skeleton while looking through a poorly pixelated screen. You blank out for a bit, your hysterical thoughts becoming your main focus.

*Ding*

You flinch, your breath escaping your throat. The bell on the counter was being tapped multiple times. You became red realizing how stupid you were going to look when coming up from the floor. You push yourself up slowly making your way to your feet.

"Does he remember me?" The little voice in your head repeated.

You looked like a nervous mess. Your eyes shamefully landed on the skeleton. Your vision felt hazy. Until eventually your eyes met his glowing white pinpricks. It felt so surreal, as if this was some type of dream. Was he really in front of you right now?

The sound of things hitting the counter surprised your nerves making your shoulders tense. The skeleton placed some crinkled cash and some coins on the counter. You slightly deadpanned realizing you were going to have to count and straighten all that cash.

Still lazy as ever you see.

Scanning, your eyes couldn't help but take a few glances at the skeleton. You became even more shy once realizing that he may not remember you after all, you felt embarrassed. You scanned a candy bar checked out the multicolored slurpee and finally—

"Human."

You jumped causing the monster to look at you funny. He pointed behind you. You turned your head at the wall of cigarettes.

"How much are you selling that pack for?"

You tried to recollect any ounce of memory but suddenly found that your brain was acting a bit slow. After a moment you answered with the price. He hummed you could hear his bone rattle in response. "Eh, never mind I'll pass, not like I got the lungs for those sticks anyways." He winked. You hadn't noticed the lack of eye contact he was giving you. You smiled giving him a breathy chuckle.  This seemed to catch his eyes.

Does he really not remember you?

Should you ask.?

"Anyway, keep the change."

And with that you watched as he left out the gas station the door dinging loudly as he did. Once he disappeared into the night you sunk to your feet in embarrassment. You can't believe you ran into him. Out of all the places and out of all the times! You groaned out, the humiliation was just unbearable. Sure nothing awkward happened—except for when he watched you get up from the floor but— he pretended not to know you! Standing back up, you hit your head against the counter.

Why did you feel so bad??

It's not like you were ever planning to tell him you were back in town. Who were you kidding, of course you were going to run into that damn skeleton. Your paths always seem to cross no matter where you go. You just wish you had seen each other again under  different circumstances. Well, hopefully this'll be the last time you see him... you let out a bitter sigh, a soft smile reaching your lips.

"Oh Sans, you knew I was home didn't you?"
