Nobody knew what Nika had on Jeff, but Jeff ended up with time in juvie and expelled from Dalton and Nika had a couple hours of community service.
Wes didn't want to leave his new dorm. He felt absolutely humiliated. Everyone would know now, that he was a liar, a fake.
He squeezed his eyes shut. You are not a liar. You aren't faking anything. You're transgender.
Even in his thoughts, the word made him wince.
He swallowed, speaking quietly. "T-transg–"
He cleared his throat, trying again. "Tran-transgender isn't a dirty word," he managed to say aloud.
He took a deep breath. "Transgender isn't a dirty word," he repeated to himself. "Transgender isn't a dirty word. It's a label, and it's what I am. Transgender isn't a dirty word."
Wes began to calm down, opening his eyes back up. "Things are going to be alright. Fuck the student body's opinions. My name is Wes, not Serafina, and I know I have friends who will fight for me if anyone tries to call me that."
He got up, straightening his tie. Things are going to be alright, he told himself again.
When he walked through the hallway to the dining hall, someone ran up to him. He got ready to ignore them.
"Wes! I was hoping to see you. Oh my god, I'm so sorry about Jeff, he's so mean and complaining out of line. I just– I know we don't know each other, but that was just awful and I feel like I had to say something. Solidarity, I guess. All my friends agree, I'm glad he was expelled."
Wes felt himself smile. "Thank you. That really means a lot."
And he didn't need to tell himself that things were going to be alright. Because for once, he actually believed they would be.
