𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐱 - 𝐀𝐧 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝

Bucky approached the door slowly, placing his hand on the knob and swiftly swinging it open.

A woman with short, curly blonde hair had been about to knock on the door. She gasped at seeing Bucky. "Um, sorry, wrong room- Maddie?" Maddie's jaw dropped. "Jenny!" She ran up to her best friend and threw her arms around her. "What are you doing here?" Jennifer laughed, "Not as much as you, apparently."

Maddie and Bucky glanced at each other, both embarrassed. "No no no, we weren't, um..." Jennifer amusedly grinned at them. "I'm kidding. I'm gonna be working for Tony Stark after the holidays, and I thought I'd stop by." She looked at Bucky, her green eyes narrowing a tiny bit. Jennifer was the one person whose emotions Maddie couldn't read (and neither knew why) but she didn't really have to. Jennifer was very expressive. "This is... Bucky, right?" Bucky shifted his weight from foot to foot nervously. "Yes." Jennifer frowned slightly. "Is something wrong? Oh!" She saw Daisy whimpering in the corner and her smile returned. "Maddie, you didn't tell me you got a dog! Awh, it's so cute! What's its name?"

Maddie glanced back at Daisy. "Actually, it's Bucky's dog. Her name is Daisy." Jennifer pressed her hands to her heart. "So cute! I'll leave you two to... whatever you were doing. I've got to check out my room anyways. See you!" She closed the door on her way out and Bucky turned to Maddie. "Is she your best friend or something?" Maddie laughed a little. "Yeah. She has been since tenth grade. I can't read her emotions."

"Really? Why?"

"We don't know. Maybe she has powers."

"She knows you can read emotions?"

"She's my best friend. I tell her everything."

"That's fair."

Maddie walked back over to her bed, taking the heart necklace out of the box. "Come help me put this on, I wanna see how I look in it." Bucky gave her a crooked smile. "You look good in anything, doll."

After Maddie tried on the necklace, the two of them stayed up most of the night talking. Bucky told Maddie the little memories he had from before being captured by HYDRA.

"Steve used to be so small. I had to protect him. And wow, having two arms was nice. Guess it's too late for that."

"It's hard to imagine Steve being tiny. Was he shorter than me?"

"Yeah, actually, he was."

Maddie told Bucky about having to deal with anxiety since childhood.

"I thought since my parents didn't love me, no one would. And I thought I was the one doing something wrong, that I wasn't good enough. I'm always scared my friends are gonna see what's wrong with me, or that they already do and they won't tell me."

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with you. Anyone who says any different is just jealous of how wonderful you are."

Neither of them realized they'd fallen asleep together until the next morning.
