"It has been nearly a week since the bodies of Assistant Detective Alex Kennedy and Japanese-American Private Investigator Tokyo Daylight were found near Newman street. Colleagues say that Daylight and her partner had dashed out of the building mere minutes before a gunshot could be heard, followed by a scream. The bodies of these detectives, along with that of another man recently identified as Raphael Durand, were discovered a few hours later-"
Alya clicked off the TV, face sour as she buried herself into Marinette's shoulder. "I can't watch that anymore" the brunette groaned, looking up at her friend with pity in her eyes.
"Are you going to be okay tonight? I knew you talked to Tokyo a lot during the weeks she was here? I can stay overnight, if you'd like"
"She was a common customer here... It's really a shame... But I think I'll be fine. I'll go to sleep early"
Alya nodded, reaching out to squeeze the blunette's hand "Okay, Mari. I've got to get back home before it gets too dark" she gestured towards the setting sun "Call me if you need anything, m'kay?"
As Marinette nodded once more, Alya exited the shop. Sabine and Tom came up to their daughter a few moments later "Are you sure you're okay, Marinette? Do you want to head up to your room early?"
The bluette shook her head, flashing an extra-bright smile towards her parents "No... I think I'm going to take a walk... get some fresh air"
The couple hesitated, before nodding and handing Marinette her jacket "Okay, but be home soon. Aubade hasn't attacked since poor Tokyo and Alex, but that doesn't mean she's gone"
Soon the designer was exiting the shop, a box of macaroons in one hand and her bag in another. First, she made her way to the park. Tokyo and Alex had been spotted there many times over the course of the few weeks when they worked on the case, and many people had created a shrine to thank them for their bravery. It was funny how people would yell at them for taking up so much space when they were here alive, but when they were Aubade's victims their presence was missed.
Even so, Marinette laid the box of macaroons in between Alex and Tokyo's pictures as gently as she could, looking around to make sure no one else was there before crouching down and saying a few words and apologies.
"It's so sad that your both gone" Marinette finished quietly, standing up and smiling at the pictures with pity "You were such great customers"
She left the shrine when another person walked through the park gates, pushing up her hood and making her way towards the exit. Glancing at her watch, she noticed the time, quickly power-walking towards the Agreste household. Careful not to be seen by the Gorilla or Adrien, Marinette made her way towards Gabriels' office, opening the door with ease.
The designer noticed her immediately, frowning from behind his desk. "I had just sent Nathalie to open the gate for you. You sure are in a hurry"
Marinette rolled her eyes and pouted "I have a curfew, this can't last forever"
The blonde frowned, muttering something that sounded suspiciously like "God, I'm working with an actual child" and gestured for Marinette to come closer to the painting.
The blunette's mouth formed in "o" as she stared in awe at the painting opening up as Gabriel pressed in a series of buttons. The two rode the elevator down, passing many layers of the house until they stopped. A bridge led to a glowing incubator-looking thing holding a blonde woman. She looked suspiciously like the woman set as Adrien's computer screen and on the painting. With a gasp, Marinette realized it was none other than Emilie Agreste, Adrien's mom and Gabriel's wife.
"You understand, then" Gabriel said, "You understand why I do this" he pointed to the moth brooch on his chest.
Marinette nodded, laughing slightly "Yes, and I can't say you're terrible. I've done far worse things for love... I do think we will be powerful, working together for Adrien. You're going about akuma's the wrong way and you'll never getting the miraculouses at this rate"
Gabriel huffed, angry at the truth in her words. "Fine, then. You'll start an internship here on monday as cover. Just- Give me more details on how you defeated Daylight. She is- WAS the best private investigator in Japan and America. And your a- a child!"
Marinette smirked "Oh, that was simple. Miss Daylight has a strange sweet tooth, if you put a cake within five feet from her it's gone in ten seconds. I was able to create a non-lethal poison that dulled her senses, putting it in every sweet she bought. But-" the designer plucked a crumpled sheet of paper from her pocket, suspiciously reading "DON'T EAT CAKE" "-someone warned her. And that's why Tokyo's heightened senses were able to hear us the night she died, though she was still weak and couldn't fight back. Now, who could this person be? Well, along with this note we have a note in code. It's "The Phone Number Code" from a game I used to play. It reads "WANT PROOF LEAVE CAKE" gee, what likes cake so much? Well, then we have a polaroid picture. And it shows... nothing! Why would Tokyo take a picture of nothing with a polaroid camera? It's a waste of money, but... what if she thought she was taking a picture of something? But what could be invisible? I'll tell you what. A kwami"
"Ladybug" Gabriel hissed, fists balling at his sides "We need to get her miraculous first, Chat Noir and the rest of the miraculous users will fall if we get her"
"Oh, there's no need for that" Marinette hummed, grabbing a sleeping Tikki from her bag.
Gabriel's eyes narrowed "The kwami doesn't equal the miraculous"
"Oh, Hawky. You really are as oblivious as your son" Marinette grinned, popping off her earrings and causing Tikki to disappear "I am Ladybug"
