The dragon...
Her heart was racing. She looked around, trying to find a footprint, a shadow, anything!
“Vair! Vairceus!” she called out, walking briskly into the woods, distancing herself from the town.
She continued to call out for her friend, her hood had fallen in her search. The cold night air nipped annoying at her skin, making her cheeks rosy and her nose a light tint of pink. She shivered in the icy wind.
“V-VAIRCEUS!” she called out once more.
Ariadne rubbed her hands together, turning to go back home. As she rounded one of the large evergreen trees, she bumped into something broad and soft. Staggering back, she looked up at the figure. It was a man in his mid-twenties with black hair and dark brown eyes.
“What’re you doin’ out ‘ere so late at night?” he asked in a gruff voice.
“M-Mr. Napleous! I could ask you the same question.” Ariadne said, recognizing the voice of her neighbor.
“I’ve come to check on the dragon.” He answered as if it were obvious.
“D-Dragon?!” she said, feigning surprise.
“Darn right, he’s just o’er that way. Surprised ya d’nt see ‘em. Why’re you out ‘ere anyhow? An’ who’s Vairceus?”
“Vairceus? U-uhm…. he’s a bird. I helped him the other day and he disappeared this morning.”
“What’s the bird look like?”
“U-uh he’s all black e-except for a stripe of red on his wings and his eyes are a mix of many b-blues, almost purple.”
“Haven’t seen him…. Anyway, come on. I’ll take ya home af’er I’m done ‘ere.”
She nodded and followed the man, wondering where Vair had gone. When they reached the clearing, the man grumbled. Ariadne tried to look as frightened as possible when he turned to her.
“Where’s the dragon?” she asked.
“Escaped….” he said.
He grabbed her wrist, pulling her back to town.
“Quick, I have to warn the town.” he said.
he pulled her toward her house. When they reached it, she stopped him.
“Wait, don’t knock. If you wake my brother, my parents will be quite angry.” she said, holding his arm.
He nodded, “In ya go then.”
She quietly opened the door and right before she closed it, she gave him a beaming smile. When she closed the door, she failed to notice the blush covering his cheeks.
