I rolled over trying to fall asleep. It used to be so much easier with Darry on the other side of the room. Every time I got upset or scared he would let me crawl into his bed. But forget that I'm 13 now and I need to stop being such a baby. But every time I closed my eyes I just kept seeing the coffins being lowered into the ground. Ugh. I'm never going to fall asleep.
I rolled my butt out of bed and slowly walked into the kitchen trying no to make any noise. But of course I stepped on one loose floorboard and, "creeeeeeek..." I stopped dead in my tracks, like a deer in headlights. I peeked through Darry's cracked door he was dead asleep. Thank the lord. I walked carefully to the fridge where I grabbed some milk. As I glanced toward the clock, 5AM, I heard soft crying. I looked in the living room but Johnny wasn't there. That's when I realized it was coming from Darry's room. I didn't want to be the obnoxious sister I always was and go in but then of course, "creeeeeeek...", dang it.
"Evie?" Darry whispered. I poked my head through the door and gave him a pathetic little wave. I then pointed to the glass of milk I was carrying. He nodded and I walked back to my room. It was always a little weird when Darry and I shared a room. I mean he was 8 years older than me. I always thought he and Soda should share a room but Soda and Pony have always been real close. Besides I was what they call a mistake. Every time Pony gets mad at me he makes sure to remind me.
I didn't exactly enjoy having three brothers who all were in a gang. I worried sometimes that one of them would get killed in a fight or something like that. I also didn't enjoy being the youngest. They're always babying me. I'm not allowed to go anywhere alone, I have to be in my bedroom at 10, and I can't go over to any boys houses. That last one really sucks because my best friend is a boy, Benny.
