my dearest love,
i wish you'd know which words to say
when starlit nights turn obsidian
and our brightest days fade into gray.

before all else,
i wish your embrace knew how to soothe
like the drunken words of hemingway
or the midnight spectacle of the milky way.

then maybe, just maybe, there's no hell to pay.

(if only our pitiful flame could prevail.)

every which way,
i wish my contrite heart wouldn't ricochet
or collapse through my quivering ribcage
every time your light chuckle fades away.

just in case,
i wish we could go back to the first of may
when my arms belonged around your neck
and your car still relaxed on my driveway.

then maybe, just maybe, we could hit replay.

(i still miss you like it was yesterday.)

most of all,
i wish today was our wedding day,
that you were my beloved fiancé,
and that you were the reason
i'm holding onto this ivory bouquet.

just this once,
i wish we were back at chesapeake bay,
a place where our elated hearts could hide
and your eyes smile as they gaze into mine.

maybe, just maybe, i'd convince you to stay.

(i swear i'll love you 'til my very last day.)
