The house was large to say the least but, it was in a poor way. The wood the house was made up of was splintered and cracked. Some windows were cracked and boarded up.Skyler's parent's words rang in her ears; "It's a fixer-upper, these types of houses are doing great on the market right now." She didn't see why she had to come to the house alone though, at least one of her parents should have come but they had 'important business' to attend to on the other side of the country.
She slowly began to walk up the wore down steps to the front door. The houses exterior creeped her out, she wasn't going to lie but she could kind of see potential. Shoving the key into the lock, Skyler had to put force behind the twist the locked seemed jammed and didn't want her to enter. She pressed her shoulder against the door and leaned against it.
The door swung open with an ear deafening squeak. "Well then," she sighed." Let's look at you." She fumbled to find the light switch and with a small buzz the light came on. She looked around the interior of the house wasn't as bad as she thought; the main hall was completely carpeted and furnished. She sighed dragging her bag in off the porch; the house can wait until tomorrow, first pizza. She picked up on of the many menus that had been shoved through the letter box, while the house had been unoccupied. She quickly scanned the menu and found the number.
Ordering was simple, and so was giving her address; the man on the other end of the phone gasped when he heard the address and quickly put the phone down. Skyler frowned at her phone and threw it onto the nearest couch. Only to find it buzz again. "Hello" her mother's voice said on the other end.
"Hi mom." Skyler relaxed a little hearing her mother's voice.
"How is it?" Her mother asked. She wasn't talking about the journey; she was talking about the house. She didn't really care for Skyler. I guess that's what you get for your parents being people constantly buying houses and fixing them up moving from place to place. Skyler couldn't even remember if they had a home of their own, let alone any memories of one.
"Its fine mom fully furnished just need new wood and a style update."
"Well okay, I've got to go because of the time difference, make sure you call grandma okay? Bye!" She didn't even wait for a reply before putting the phone down. Skyler sat down on the couch and waited for her pizza to arrive, while mindlessly scrolling through my social media. Everyone from her old school seemed to be having so much fun, going out to parties, getting into relationships, while she couldn't stay in one place.
A knock on the door brought Skyler out of her thoughts. She had to pull against the door with all her strength to get it to open. She opened the door to find a tall boy with murky green eyes.
"Uh, hey." He stammered. "Your pizzas free because it was over 30 minutes." He shoved the pizza into my arms.
"Thanks," She laughed, squinting at his name badge, "Ashton."
"You're welcome." He stood awkwardly on the door step, playing with his hands. "Erm, I live a couple of doors down if you want to ever hang out, number 47."
"Okay, guess I'm going to need some friends." Skyler joked.
"Yeah." He laughed. "I've got to go, before my boss gets mad for handing out more free pizza."
"Okay, see you soon Ashton." Skyler said while shutting the door.
She spent most of the night lying on the carpeted floor of the house, mindlessly playing on her phone and exploring the house. She decided that since her parents weren't going to be here to tell her what to do, she'd claim the largest room.
After quickly getting ready she settled into a sleeping bag on the floor (she didn't like sleeping in beds they found in the houses she'd much rather wait for hers to arrive). As she began to drift off into unconsciousness, she heard one simple word, that she wasn't sure if her mind was simply too tired to register or she'd mistook a groan of the old house.
"Skyler."
