Masky drives and I sit in the passenger seat on the drive to the donut shop. Masky tells me jokes and I laugh at all of them, even the stupid ones. Once we get to the donut shop I slump out of the car and stumble a bit but then catch myself and walk into the store with Masky. Masky puts his arm around me and tells the women behind the counter that we want a dozen donuts. She is a short woman with bright pink hair and green eyes. She looks at me with slightly worried eyes, “Is she okay?”
Masky quickly answers, “Yeah, she gave a lot of blood yesterday.”
“Oh, how much did she give? Usually people don’t come out like that.”
“She gave too much; she has a super rare blood type so they made her give a lot of blood.”
“They usually don’t do that.” She raises a suspicious eyebrow.
“It’s all her fault really, she wanted to donate more and more blood until it was unhealthy.”
“Oh,” She looks and me and then suddenly smiles, “Thank you for your donation.”
I smile and the Masky gestures for me to pick out all of my donuts that I want. We give the woman her money and take our donuts in the car then drive home. Once we get home we head straight for my secret room. We sit down together and eat straight out of the box. One thing I love about living with a bunch of men is that none of them care how messy or gross I am. I mean, Jack eats kidneys so I’m not that weird around here. I smile at Masky as we eat our donuts and we watch movies. I eventually go into my bathroom to wash my hands when someone knocks on my door.
“Come in!” I yell and Dad walks in.
“I came in to check on you, how are you doing?” He walks over to me and holds his hands awkwardly together.
“I’m doing better; I heal quickly so I should be back to my normal killing of criminals in no time.”
He chuckles awkwardly and then sits down on my bed, “You are defiantly your mother’s daughter. She never wanted to kill the innocent. Which is funny because that is all I do,” He looks at his hands, “I know you gave her ring back to her when she came back but when she died I decided that she didn’t need it anymore so I took it off of her finger and…” He trails off for a moment and then snaps back into reality, “I put it back on a necklace for you.” He opens his hands and gently puts the necklace in my hands. I stare at the shining stones and I close my hands tightly as I hold back the tears. As dad gets up to leave the room I hug him tightly.
“I love you.” I whisper.
He hugs me back and I hear him say, “I love you to the moon and back.”
I bite my lip and let the tears roll down, It’s hard hearing what my mom told me every night before I went to bed when she’s no longer here. We let go of our hug and I quickly wipe the tears off my face before he notices. He nods his head and then rushes out of my room. I put the necklace around my neck and look in the mirror. I smile at my reflection and then go back to Masky.
“I’m going to your mom’s house, do you wanna come with me?”
He looks at me and smiles, “Sure, I’d love to go see my family with you.”
He gets up and I lead the way down the stairs. We walk out the front door and through the forest until we get to the little cottage where Masky’s family lives. We knock on the door and Grace answers the door. She looks at us with relief and lets us in quickly before shutting the door and locking it. She sits us down and looks around the room.
“What’s wrong?” Masky asks.
“Someone has been stalking us.” She whispers.
“What?” I ask confused.
She takes a deep breath, “Well yesterday before David went to work he caught someone looking into our kitchen window with a camera. When Jane was playing outside she screamed and I went out to see what was going on and I saw a man with a messy beard and an old jacket chasing her around the yard. And just this morning I found the same man trying to climb up the ivy into my bedroom window. Jane is up in her room and is scared to death. We are planning on moving so that we don’t have to deal with this.”
I stiffen, “I can solve this issue.”
“Anabelle… I don’t like this idea.” Masky says, he knows what I’m thinking. He knows that I want to stay up in a tree until he strikes again.
I giggle a little, “I know you don’t like it but I’m going to do it anyway and if you don’t help me I know Toby will.”
He groans, “Fine I’ll help you.”
I smile, “We’ll fix this problem for you, I promise you won’t have to move.” Grace looks at me with a relieved smile and then I turn to Masky, “Do you want to tell her what we’ve been up to these past two days?”
Grace looks at me confused, “What did you do?”
Masky rubs his arm awkwardly, “We killed Dad.”
“The bastard is dead?” She whispers then she repeats it louder, “The bastard is dead? Are you sure you killed him?”
I take his diamond out of my arm band and show it to Grace, “The dark red stuff in there is a mix between his life essence and his blood. People with better souls have lighter essences, for example my mother’s was a light blue. But I have discovered that the type of life essence doesn’t affect the person it is put into. So if I were to put this essence into Jane, she’d stay exactly the same. I don’t understand why it does that but hey, I’m not arguing with it.”
She holds the diamond in her hand gently and then gives it back, “Why do you keep it?”
I put it back into its place, “So that if I need to save someone, I can.” I stand up and
begin to walk up the stairs, “I’m going to go talk to Jane.”
