he looked into the mirror and combed through his long black hair, his slender fingers running through his silky locks effortlessly.
his eyes twinkled under the dim lights as he looked in the mirror.
"you know, i've always been jealous of your eyes." he heard a soft voice approaching from behind him.
the boy laughed, his shiny pink lips separating to reveal his pearly white teeth, "it's the only thing that differentiates the two of us, brother. isn't that enough?"
the boy joined his brother in front of the mirror, and alas they were carbon copies of each other; the only difference being that one brother possessed a crystal blue eye.
"but soonyoung hyung, that eye of yours lights up a room. while mine... mine are just like everyone else's." the boy sighed, his gaze switching between his face and that of his brother's. "you not only had to get the beautiful eyes, but you're older."
soonyoung laughed once more, swinging his arm around his brother's shoulder. "chan, i don't think one eye changes that much. but your spirit- your spirit is unlike anyone else! now about being older, i don't think being one minute older than you is anything to brag about."
chan chuckled softly, leaning his head onto his brother's shoulder. "but that one minute decided which of us gets to marry the emperor, and that's something to brag about in my books."
today was the day the twins were to move into the palace. it was customary for the best looking person to marry the emperor, as the crown jewel to his collection of beautiful things. once the emperor had gotten wind of the stunning twins from the mountains, he had no choice but to make them his. the matter of their marriage was decided by age, and since soonyoung bore the title as the older twin, he had the pleasure of marrying the emperor.
the twins had never met the emperor, but even up in the mountains the people had heard of his charming good looks.
but is that enough to make someone want to marry you?
soonyoung bit the inside of his cheek, "you're right, chan. i get to marry the emperor..." he trailed off, resting his head on his brother's. "do you think he's a good person?"
chan glanced away, trying to find the best words to comfort both his brother and himself. "the most we can do is hope. no matter what we have each other."
"i love you, chan." soonyoung said softly, fighting the urge to cry.
he didn't want to marry a stranger. he was scared. there was no reason as to why he should. because he's beautiful? if that were the case, then did he want to beautiful?
chan brought his hand up to stroke soonyoung's back gently, "i love you too, hyung."
the boys packed their things into the carriage, and prepared to leave the mountains. the only home they had ever known in the peaceful mountains, exchanged for a new life in the palace with strangers.
