"here are your quarters, gentlemen." jeonghan opened the doors and let the twins roam around.
their room was large, decorated with red and gold decorations, the walls a jade green. it was the same size as their home back in the mountains, which confused the twins as to how they were going to occupy all this space by themselves.
"my apologies if it's too small a space, but once soonyoung marries his highness, chan will have this room to himself which will hopefully make it more to your liking." jeonghan said matter-of-a-factly, his hands resting politely in front of his torso.
"small?!" chan gawked, his eyes jumping around the room, "this place is huge! i'm worried about this room having too much space, you know?"
"well, if you need me, there's a string there in the corner of the room; when you pull it, it sets off a bell in my room and i'll come for you. is there anything else i can help you with?"
"no jeonghan, thank you for everything." soonyoung grinned, bowing at the boy in front of him.
"i'll come for you in the morning sirs, have a good night!"
"good night jeonghan!"
as the doors closed, the twins ran around the room, inspecting every detail of it. after a few minutes, they laid on the floor and sighed. the boys were side by side, the perfect mirror of one another.
"hey soon, are you tired?" chan whispered, rolling his head over to look at his twin.
"yeah a little, but i don't think i could sleep if i tried. there's too many new things around and it's a bit overwhelming." soonyoung responded, meeting chan's gaze.
"that makes sense. well, since we're alone..." chan smirked menacingly, "you just met the emperor! what do you think? he's cute right? he seems sweet too! right?" rolling onto his stomach, chan flung his legs around and waited for a response like a girl at a sleepover.
soonyoung strained a smile as he looked up at his younger brother, "i mean he is handsome, and he does seem nice..."
"but...?"
"but... i didn't feel the spark."
a look of annoyance crossed chan's face for a second before he shot back, "soon you need to stop with that spark thing! you're not going to see someone and all of a sudden fireworks will fill the sky and sparkles will spill from your mouth. he's the emperor! he's tall, handsome and nice to us-"
"-because we're handsome, chan. he's nice to us because we're handsome. if that weren't the case then what happens? when someone somewhere shows up with a prettier face, paler skin and a nicer body? our stay here is superficial, we're not in love." soonyoung snapped, his eyebrows furrowed together as he ranted at his brother.
chan was left in shock as his brother spoke, since it wasn't often that he spoke freely like this. soonyoung was passionate about many things, this 'spark' theory being one of those things. chan had no choice but to listen to his brother speak; and though soonyoung's voice never broke or faltered, his eyes glimmered when he spoke of dreams, and dimmed when he realized his dream wouldn't come to fruition. it was a sad cycle that chan couldn't break his brother out of.
"i know that fireworks and glitter won't appear, but i like thinking that one day it'll happen. it'll happen one day, right chan?" soonyoung's eyes bore into his brother's, desperate for the smallest bit of hope.
"of course soon, it'll happen one day." chan smiled and his brother sighed deeply, resting his head back on the floor with his eyes closed.
chan was lying.
