Chapter 6
"Ugh..." Gigimon groaned. "I'm starving!"
"Surprise, surprise," I grumbled back.
"Can't we get some food soon?"
"How can you be that hungry already? We had breakfast, like, three hours ago."
"Exactly! We haven't eaten in three whole hours!"
"Jeez... Well, you'll be glad to know that we're going to get food right now."
"Really!?"
"Shhh!" The people I passed by on the sidewalk gave me strange looks as I hissed at the little red creature I was carrying under my right arm. This was New York, though, so I had no doubt they had seen stranger things than an eighteen-year-old talking to what they could only guess was some kind of toy.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to be so loud? If people hear you, then—"
"Yeah, yeah," Gigimon whispered. "So, where are we going?"
"A fast food restaurant."
"'Fast food'? What's so fast about it?"
"The name refers to how quickly it gets to you after you order it. It's placed on the counter almost immediately after you pay for it—hence, fast food."
"Oooh... Fast food is the best food!"
"I thought you'd say that."
Gigimon and I arrived in Times Square where the city's biggest instance of the world's largest fast food chain was located. As we passed under the burger joint's familiar logo, Gigimon said, "Is this it? Are we there?"
"Yup. This is the place."
"Hurray!"
"Shh."
"Hurray!" Gigimon whispered this time.
I marched up to the counter, Digimon in hand, and ordered two double burgers and two orders of ten chicken nuggets, along with two large fries and two drinks. Since I was ordering two of everything, all eyes in my vicinity shifted toward Gigimon under my arm, then back at me. But no one said anything.
The food came as quickly as I had told Gigimon it would. Once I had it I went to the fountain to fill our cups with soda. Then, I brought Gigimon and our food to an empty table in the far corner of the restaurant's second floor. I sat down, placed Gigimon on the table on the opposite side of me, then put the trays of food down between us.
"Alright, Gigimon. Eat, but do it slowly, okay?"
"But Milo...won't people get suspicious if they see me moving around and eating stuff?"
"I'm hoping if you stay still enough, anyone who sees you eating will just think it was their eyes playing tricks on them. If that doesn't work out, maybe I can convince them you're my fat, mutant gerbil or something."
"Fat!?"
"You know, for a gerbil."
"Meanie. Anyway, do you really think that'll work?"
"It is New York, after all. Most folk here have seen stranger things."
"If you say so. Anyway, where should I start? It all looks so good!"
"Hmm. If you're asking for my recommendation, I'd start with the nuggets. Wash that down with a bit of soda, then work up to the burger."
"What about the fries?"
