Emily walked into her first class. I curled into a little ball in her pocket, hoping she wouldn't take me out.
"You're Emily I presume," A male voice snapped.
"How did you know?" Emily asked.
"Everyone else is here," The male spoke angerly. "If you had bothered to pay attention to your emails you would have known class started early today."
"I-I am so sorry sir," Emily apologized.
"Now where is the human," The man mumbled. "She is late as well."
My eyes shot open as Emily's fingers reached into her pocket and wrapped her fingers around me, reveling me to whom I believe is our professor.
"You're Hazel the human correct?" the teacher asked unfazed.
"Y-Yes sir," I quiver.
The man grabbed the back of my shirt and lifted me in the air examining me. I pulled my knees into my chest and started at him. Waiting for him to move. I turned back to Emily giving her a look. I want her to get me out of here. I want her to take me back to the dorm.
"Fasinating," The professor mumbled. "I've never seen a human up close."
"I would prefer it if you gave her back to me," Emily spoke.
The professor moved his eyes off me and redirected his attention to Emily. He moved me towards her and dropped me in the palm of her hand. I scooted to the back of her palm and hugged her thumb.
"Now find a seat and make sure to put Hazel on the desk," the professor spoke.
Emily nodded and moved to the back of the class. She slowly slid me onto the desk and pushed me to the front. I wanted to say something to her but nothing came out. Instead I watched her grab her giant text book and pencil.
I sat on the front of the desk not knowing what to do. Should I ask to look off her book? I turned and faced Emily. She was tapping her pencil against the desk as she glared down at her text book annoyed. I thought it was best to leave her be. I wouldn't want to anger her.
The professor walked up to his podium and began his lecture. His loud voice managed to reach all the way to the back. I couldn't believe a giant could be so loud. I looked a little closer and realized he had a mic. I should have known. The collage in my home town gives instructors the same mics but more our size.
I slouched back in my uncomfortable sitting position as I listened to the professors lecture. I could hear Emily writing onto her text book from behind me. I started to get really bored. I pulled out my phone and started to scroll through random apps. After a few minutes i felt Emily's finger tap my back. I turned to look at her and see seemed annoyed.
"Put your phone way," she whispered, "your supposed to be paying attention to the lecture."
"I don't really find this interesting," I spoke.
I could tell Emily was getting mad. "I know you don't want to be here but at least try to care," Emily whispered.
"I don't even have a text book," I mumbled.
"Then look off of mine."
"How am i supposed to look at the entire text book? That thing is huge!"
"Then leave the class," She whispered angerly.
I looked into her eyes, I felt petrified. Feeling a tad scared I leaned over the edge wondering what would my chances be if I jumped off. "I don't think i can."
Emily sighed as she went back to writing on her text book. I didn't think she would get this mad. She is scary when mad. All I did was pull out my phone.
After the professor finished with his lecture Emily put away her textbook and without warning plucked me off the table. I felt a shiver go down my spine as Emily dropped me in her pocket. I started to breath heavy, she wasn't her usual gentle self. What if yesterday was an act, what if she was just pretending.
I sat in silence as I heard her get up from her seat and walk out the door. She didn't speak to anyone. I layed against the side of her pocket till it was silent. Her fingers wrapped around me. I yelped as she pulled me out of her pocket. She raised me till we were face to face, she seemed more calm than in the classroom.
"Are you going to continue school here?" Emily mumbled.
"Of course," I spoke.
"I don't get why you're even here," Emily continued to mumble. "Why go to a collage when you have no interest in it."
I stayed quiet for a moment. I didn't really want to tell her so soon, but she seems to be eager for answers.
"I came to this collage because my mother was going to kick me out of the house," I spoke quietly, "she didn't want me to become a dead beat so she choose some classes and told me to take an exam."
"Why a giant's school?" Emily asked.
"I-" I paused for a moment. "I-I have... a fear... of. giants... My mother has been attempting to help me get rid of it but... I just get terrified. On the news I watched as a kid there were constantly something about 'giant kills human' or 'giant goes rampant'." I paused again. I felt a sob attempting to escape my throat, I haven't thought about them in a while. I hope Emily didn't notice. "It scares me how powerful you giants are compared to us weak humans. We are nothing compared to you."
"Hazel..", Emily's voice softens. "Not all giants are like that."
"I know! But how am I supposed to tell the difference!" I yelled. "How am I supposed to figure that out???"
Emily looked away. "I-I guess you can't," she whispered.
I turned away and pulled my knees in my chest. Emily sighed as she gently placed me on her table.
"I'll leave you alone.." Emily spoke gently. "Our next class won't be for another hour."
I nodded but I doubt she could see it. My small head was facing the opposite direction. My heart sank as I thought about my previous actions. I shouldn't have yelled at her. She has been nothing but kind to me.
