When Kyle finally comes home after getting Jesse Manes to the hospital he's met with smoke filling the apartment and a fire on the stove above an unconscious Dani. Dani must've short-circuited the fire alarm with her scream as it wasn't currently going off. "Dani!" Kyle yells out while coughing and rushes to her turning of the stove and then picking her up and dragging her out of the apartment. Once he gets her outside he to some fresh air he starts checking for a pulse and calls 9-1-1 to inform them about the fire and nearly tells them about Dani before remembering she's an alien and he has no way of protecting her from the type of tests they'd need to take that would also tell them what she is so as soon as he's off the phone he's putting her in has car and driving to the hospital.
He carefully sneaks her in and takes her a room and marks it as occupied before rushing out to get the supplies he needs and starts working on helping her. He continuously tries calling Liz who doesn't pick up, him needing a second pair of hands. So, he does it all himself, he's frantic since it's his sister he's trying to save and there's a reason doctor's don't perform surgeries on family. He does everything by the book, takes in everything that could be wrong with her and treats her accordingly. He gives her an oxygen mask for the smoke, treats the burns that she got from the fire. he checked her head to make sure it was just a minor injury and anything else he had to do but, after that, all he could do was wait.
He eventually is satisfied that she's stable and nothing else will go wrong so he borrows some oxygen and carefully and sneakily wheels her out and takes her to the army base and makes her comfortable. He couldn't keep her at the hospital in fear she'd be found out and his apartment was inhabitable, he'd even considered calling Alex but, something kept telling him not to. It was like an echoing voice inside his head telling him that wasn't the right call so, he took her to the only other place he could where she would be safe. Jesse Manes was taken care of for now so he didn't have to worry about him showing up. All he had to worry about was his sister.
It's a couple hours later when she starts stirring and he's immediately by her side. "Hey, take it easy. I've got you." "Kyle?" she mumbles out with her eyes still shut. "Yeah, it's me Dani. How are you feeling?" "I feel like I'm dead and have been ripped in two." "Yeah." "What happened?" "You don't know?" "No, I can't remember." "You must've been making breakfast and hit your head and passed out. Luckily I found you in time or you would've died of smoke inhalation alone." "Thank you." "Yeah, your welcome. You think you can open your eyes?" "Maybe." "Alright you want to give it a try." "Sure." she mumbles out before starting to flutter her eyes open. "Everything's blurry." "Just give your eyes some time to adjust." "No, Kyle everything is so blurry." she chokes out in a watery voice. "Just give it a minute okay. I promise it's going to be okay."
It's a while later and the blurriness has faded some but is still present so they decide to get her an eye appointment and they're able to squeeze her in now. And as it turns out she suddenly needs a pretty high prescription of glasses. They explain that it was sudden and ask if it could be a result of her smoke inhalation or hitting her head. Given that it was sudden they asked for her to come back in, in a month or if things start getting worse and they could look into it. So that day she went home with glasses and they had to start working on insurance claims and explaining why they weren't there when the police and fire trucks arrived. Eventually it was understood that Dani had been inside and Kyle rushed her to the hospital immediately.
So, eventually they were let back inside to get some things and called their mom who would allow them to live with her until they could pack up and start looking for a new place. It was decided between them that packing up could wait for tomorrow given their day. They headed to their rooms but before they could go their separate ways Dani stopped Kyle, "I'm scared. What if it does get worse." "Everything will be fine, and I promise, I will be with you every step of the way." "Okay. Night." "Good night." That night Dani dreamt, well, remembered what really happened that day. It was horrific she cried in her sleep and couldn't stop mumbling out Max's name.
She realized even though what she remembered was real that no one had mentioned anything. So, she didn't either. The town seemed to believe that Max was still alive and just out of town. Two weeks went by of this same thing and she went through life numb. She started noticing new graffiti in town that reminded her of Rosa's work and it felt like a stab to the heart every time she saw them. She'd decided not to go to Noah's funeral given what happened, she knew she wouldn't be able to pretend like she wasn't happy he was gone. Or cry by thinking of watching Max die, she sees his death every time she closes her eyes. It haunts her, she's even resorted to drinking again. She has to sneak booze in the house or go to Planet 7 to drink. She's been able to keep herself from getting drunk and hasn't touched drugs but, she knows the path she's going down is a dangerous one for her and she needs to find her way off it.
She's been drinking for a lot of reasons. The fact that it's been confirmed recently by her new doctor, cause now she needs a doctor, that she's losing her sight, slowly but surely. They don't know if it'll reach a point and stop or, if she'll go blind. They believe it's the hit to the head the must've caused it but, Dani knows that is has to do with Liz's serum and Max dying, that's just something she knows in her gut. But that's not the main reason, neither is the reminder of Rosa or Max's death. It's the fact she's been hearing voices. She can't ever make them out enough to understand them but, they are screaming at her. So, she drinks, trying to quiet the voices in any way she can. It feels like all she can do to drown them out, so, she does.
She's been doing the daily gig of being the house band for the Pony for the past week and a half so that's been a good outlet and keeps her busy. Which is what she was currently doing, her and her band were working and with Rosa recently on her brain she decided to sing the last song she ever wrote that had something to do with her.
"Another head hangs lowly
Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
Who are we mistakenBut you see it's not me
It's not my family
In your head, in your head
They are fighting
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head they are cryingIn your head
In your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-e-e-e
What's in your head?
In your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-e-e-e ohAnother mother's breaking heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistakenIt's the same old theme since 1916
In your head, in your head
Their still fighting
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head they are dyingIn your head
In your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-e-e-e
What's in your head?
In your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-e-e-e oh"
