The sun had already set when they walked out of the apartment building. Even though March was slowly coming to an end a chilly wind blew through the town. Mihae hugged herself. She did not feel as cold as this morning but she still felt a bit cold. So she put her hands on the pockets of her big fluffy jacket and followed Hak who was already a few steps ahead.
Hak's mind was full of questions as he walked through the city streets. His black eyes fell briefly on the many lights that surrounded them. They were now passing through the busiest neighborhoods which were filled with people and shops, yet he found nothing distracting. He was so fixed on his thoughts about what Mihae's dream was that he almost lost her as they were passing a big square.
In the middle of the square, there was a band consisting of three people, two men, and a woman. The men were playing musical instruments, a guitar, and a synthesizer, while the woman sang a slow soulful love song.
When the melody struck Mihae's ears she froze and as if enchanted followed it. The singer's voice made her tear up and almost feel all the emotions she was singing about. Mihae completely lost herself in the melody forgetting everything else until the song ended. When she came back to her senses she started to look out for Hak worried, to only find him beside her looking down at her. She made to brush off her tears ashamed but he stopped her
''It's alright'' he said
''No one, not even us, cannot resist the power of music. You can say that it almost makes us alive''
A sad smile formed on his lips and turned his attention on the band that was starting to get ready to leave.
''Why does music have such power over us?''
Mihae asked curious
''I guess it's because through it we can feel emotions such as love and heartbreak which we are incapable of feeling otherwise.''
''But why we can't feel them?''
''Because we don't have a heart''
Hak answered leaving Mihae blinking surprised. Sensing that Hak looked at her
''We are not alive Mihae, do not forget that''
He saw her eyes falling on the ground. Hak stayed silent contemplating if he should say something to make her feel better but what could he say? He was not good at comforting and could easily make her worse, yet, Hak wanted to do something so he decided to make her understand.
''Give me your hand'' he politely said
She looked at him for a moment and then slowly gave him her right hand, which he took and placed it on his chest.
''Listen'' he murmured and she did
Closing her eyes she felt his chest going up and down yet she could not feel a pulse. She pushed harder and again silence. Slowly she took her left hand out of the pocket and placed it on her chest only to meet the same silence. Opening her eyes she looked at Hak
''But how can we breath?''
''That I cannot answer Mihae''
Her hands fell into her sides and her head began to move downwards. Hak saw her visibly drunk and spotted a few tears falling to the ground. His mind went black and a wave of sadness hit him. Then it retrieved and another bigger than the last crushed on him making him feel suffocated. He had to do something. He could not stand by and watch her cry.
''Mihae, look at me'' his voice was gentle and warm which surprised both of them
''Yes, we are dead but we can enjoy ourselves too.''
