I threw the rest of my muffins into my bag and followed right behind him, shutting the door on my way out.<><><><><>
As soon as I step out of the car, I'm enveloped in a really, really tight hug by my Best friend.
"I'm so, so sorry I didn't follow you back to your house!" Emma said, letting go of me. Only to hug me again. "I should have followed you home! I can't believe I let you walk around in the night, alone in a new country! What is wrong with me!? I thought something bad had happened, Ariel! I don't even want to imagine—"
I cut her off from her rant by putting a finger on her lips. Slowly, she glanced down at it, then back at me.
"Emma, It's okay. It's not even your fault! What is wrong with you? I'm the one who didn't listen to you in the first place! You tried to follow me, and I ran away." I took a deep breath and looked her in the eyes. "I'm sorry."
I had been expecting her to say something, anything, but she didn't. When I opened my mouth to ask her why she wasn't saying anything— she pointed at my finger on her lips.
"You're forgiven." she said once I dropped my finger. "But, tell me what happened."
"My brother didn't tell you?" I asked as we began walking up to the school.
"Nope!" She said, popping the 'P'. "I was on the call with him when you came, so I only heard about you going missing."
"Oh," I nodded, stopping in front of my locker to wonder how I'd begin the story. I wondered hard and long, but when nothing popped into my head, I gave up and went straight to the point. "Well, you see. . .I was almost raped by a drunk, hairy man who, for some reason, smelled of ginger."
At that very moment, my best friend choked on air. Quickly, I rushed forward to pat on her back. When, a few moments later, her coughing had subsided, and she was clutching unto a locker to keep her from falling over, she yelled: "WHAT!?"
Her voice boomed all through the hallway and, immediately, everyone in hearing distance turned to look at her. Emma, though, ignored them and turned towards my locker, waiting patiently to hear my explanation.
"Did you just say. . . .You were almost raped?" She asked, her eyes widening. "You mean, someone tried to actually do. . .the deed with you, forcefully?"
"Well, not really," I said, closing my locker and leading her to the classroom. "He told me to strip first, and when i didn't, that's when he tried."
Emma looked bewildered as she sat down beside me. "Girl, stop keeping everything to yourself! I was worrying sick, tell me what happened!"
And so I did.
By the time I was done, Emma was quivering with laughter. She held her belly, then hit her hand repeatedly on the table, trying to stop the laughter. When that didn't work, she fell on the ground and began rolling over there.
"The Story isn't really that funny! And your supposed to be serious about this! I was almost hurt!" I yelled, trying to get her to hear me through all the talking in the classroom. It didn't work.
Exactly 1 minute later, Emma stood up, wiped an invisible tear from the corner of her eye, and sat back down on the chair.
"Sorry, were you saying something?" She asked, acting like she hadn't just laughed at me for the past minute. I deserved it but that doesn't mean she had to do it. . .
I opened my mouth to say something to her—but at that exact moment, loud cheers and choruses rang from outside the class. Both our heads snapped towards the commotion, completely forgetting what we had been about to say.
