"Sue, what are you doing here?" I asked as she approached my bed in the hospital wing.
"Mas...Draco, I have a message from the Grandmaster." The pretty Ravenclaw sat in one of the two empty chairs at my side.
I propped myself up in bed and straightened the covers. "What is it?"
"Diggory."
I took a deep breath and waited for her to continue.
"He's been stripped of his status but remains—for now."
"What does this have to do with me?"
"Grandmaster is leaving his punishment to you."
"That's unusual considering the offense." I squinted at Sue. "What do you think is fair?"
She tilted her head as she usually did when thinking. "He hurt you, and if he's willing to do that to the person he claims to love, I worry that he would harm more of us in the future. It might be wise to make him leave permanently."
"I would hate for any of you to be harmed by him. But I don't think Seth deserves to lose his support system, especially right now."
She nodded. "True. His father still mourns for Cedric. Seth will never live up to his golden-boy brother."
"What if you were him, would you feel being kicked out is fair?"
She smiled. "One, I'm not stupid enough to fall for you, so I would never have behaved the way he did. And two, no. I think he needs a new Master that can guide him through this and teach him to not poison his body like he did. Clearly, his better judgment was affected by it, and he might not have behaved that way if he was sober."
"Agreed."
"So, what's the verdict?"
"Have him reassigned to another Circle unless my request to be released is granted. Then someone else will become Master and they can re-train him."
"When I first heard, I hoped it was a rumor. Even though you haven't participated for a long while, we held out the hope that you'd return. But then..." She frowned and held out a scroll.
My heart skipped a few beats. "Is that what I think it is?"
She nodded. "Yes, your request was granted with blessings of good health and fortune."
My fingers trembled when touching the aged papyrus. As I held it, the weight of my decision to leave lifted from my shoulders. I chuckled and took several shaky breaths. "Thank you for delivering this to me."
She nodded. "You're done with us completely, then?"
Oh, no, please don't tell me that I'm going to have another Diggory-type incident. "Yes." I waved the scroll back and forth.
She cleared her throat. "I just want to say, thank you for showing me control."
"You had it the whole time, you just didn't know it."
"Draco, I'd have never gotten past my fear of failure if you hadn't shown me that I didn't need to be afraid to be human. I will never forget that." She smiled.
"Thank you for being a good Pet. You gave me many fun and memorable moments that I'll never forget."
She stood and made it a few steps before turning and looking at me. "About that one time, I didn't—"
