The Emperor of Occultoria was sitting down to dinner in the Grand Banquet Hall of the Imperial Palace when he noticed Irina the Magician sitting at the foot of the table.
He turned to his cat Ariel, who was lounging sleepily on the chair next to him.
"What is that woman doing here?" he asked.
Ariel opened one eye. "Having dinner."
"But what is she doing? Shouldn't she be entertaining me?"
"Let her rest, Max," said Ariel, as if she couldn't be bothered.
The Emperor stared at Irina suspiciously. She was staring at him too intently for his liking. Something was up.
Irina sipped her water calmly.
She had slipped sallarella poison into the Emperor's glass of prenglas juice earlier. She had impersonated a kitchen servant in order to do so.
Now, all he had to do was to take a sip.
She watched with a pounding heart as Max lifted the glass to his mouth....
