Meanwhile, back on Divine Island....
"And the new Matriarch is....a tie...between our only two female candidates. 3 votes each," announced Scion the Camerlengo.
Then, he counted out the rest of the votes. "One for Glutton. Two for Glutton. Three for Glutton."
Everyone groaned.
Pecaminosa's blood boiled as she clenched her fists.
Her instincts had been right. Something had gone terribly wrong.
Only 3 cardinals voted for her, including herself?! That was unacceptable. That meant that only 2 of the cardinals that she had spoken to had voted for her.
She must have been outmaneuvered by Rebecca.
She stared at her corpulent opponent seated across the table.
She had clearly underestimated Cardinal Glutton.
She wondered what kind of deals the defectors had struck with Rebecca. Did Rebecca offer them more money and titles? Were Rebecca's blackmail and extortion attempts more successful than her own? They must have been, because going into the conclave, Pecaminosa had 5 out of the 6 votes.
But, no matter now. Since it was a tie, the Emperor of Occultoria would vote to break the tie. And whichever candidate had the ear of the Emperor would become the next Matriarch.
The Camerlengo stuffed the pieces of parchment back into the election box. Then, he prepared the red smoke to go out of the chimney of Saint Jebenoah's Basilica in order to alert the faithful, who were gathered in hordes around the church, that a new Matriarch had not yet been elected.
Pecaminosa's revolve hardened.
She was glad that Emperor Max owed her a favor, because she had saved his life in Monstria: the Land of Monsters.
She decided she must see the Emperor right away.
