10 years later...

"Stop, Succi!"

Grace and her significant other, Succi the succulent, had launched themselves into their fifth- yes, fifth- fight of the week. What are they fighting about, you may ask? Well, Succi was a very affectionate plant. And Grace was... well, Grace was Grace. A few hugs and kisses here and there were perfectly alright, but Succi didn't want only a few "here and there". He wanted them here, there, and everywhere, all the time, 24/7. It threw quite a wrench into their relationship.

"Give me more kisses! I am your boyfriend. I am entitled to mommy's wonderful kisses!!" The plant was demanding, that was for sure. For such a little guy with no limbs, he often got what he wanted. Grace would eventually get tired of the arguing and give in- it's just how it worked. But this time she was not having it.

"I can't kiss you all the time! It's excessive and it makes me uncomfy," Grace said as she sat down on the edge of her bed, across from the table that Succi was atop.

They were otherwise a great couple. Granted, it was a human dating a plant, but they did as well as they could. Succi was normally quite easy to take care of. He didn't take up much space, he didn't require much- if any- food, and he didn't really move unless Grace saw fit. After all, he was a succulent- upkeep wasn't an issue. Kisses and other affection, however, were a completely different story. And it was one that was likely to end in bloodshed.

"I don't care if it makes you uncomfy!! It makes me happy!"

Grace stared daggers at the little plant, silently cursing at herself for ever letting it into her life in the first place. But 10 years ago was a different time, they were different people. Times have changed and so have they. Their relationship wasn't working anymore. Of course, Grace couldn't say this. Who else would take in the overly-affectionate talking plant? Succi would be left to die alone in the cold streets. As much as it pained her to keep him, she wasn't entirely heartless.

"But what about what makes me happy, Succi?" she said with exasperation. "What about how I feel?"

The plant pouted and would probably cross its arms if it had any. Grace wasn't asking for much here, but Succi was not ready to compromise, even if it was only a little bit.

"I want kisses. And if you can't give me them then... then I'll..."
"Then you'll what?" Grace snapped, words dripping in venom. Her patience was running thin now. She stood up and crossed her room, pacing back and forth as if that would help the matter.

"I'm going to take a walk. I need some fresh air."

Succi immediately went into panic mode. Their fights never lasted this long. Grace usually would have waived the white flag long ago. The fact that she wasn't giving up and going on a walk, no less, couldn't possibly be a good sign. The thought of compromise flashed through his mind but only for a second. It was gone as soon as it appeared.

"But-but you can't leave!" Succi protested. "I need kisses! Gracie, please? Mommy?"

Grace glanced at the plant but turned away. She needed time to think, time to clear her head. It pained her to see her love suffering but she couldn't keep giving in to his demands like this. It wasn't healthy for her and it wasn't healthy for their relationship.

"I'll be back soon, don't wait up," she called before closing the door behind her. It slammed a bit louder than she intended and it left Succi feeling even more helpless and alone.
