"what are you doing?" I remember asking, as she struggled to climb over the fence. her voice was high, when she replied. and her hair had fallen out of it's originally pristine ponytail. her white t-shirt had stains of dirt at the hem, and her pink colored jeans covered in mud.

"climbing." she replied, her voice persistent and strong, even for an eight year old.

she fit her left sneaker into one of the holes in the chain link fence, and pulled herself onto the top of the horizontal pole. when she brought her leg over the fence, she then jumped down and landed on the ground.

I remember watching her as she dusted off her hands on the fabric of the shirt that was not stuck with mud.

she began to run to the playground, in the direction of the large orange slide, when she must have recalled my existence.

she paused, and looked back at me. "aren't you coming?"

I hesitated before responding, "i'm not supposed to be out after the sunset." i yelled.

she frowned, and it looked silly when someone so small made the action. "but the dark is the best part of the day." she told me. "it's not sunset, yet."

"come with me." she shouted to me, and then she ran.

so I followed, my flip flops smacking against my feet as I ran towards the mysterious girl with the muddy hands.

she climbed up the stairs to the slide, but instead of going in the direction of it, she turned and went to the monkey bars.

when I finally reached the stairs, she had climbed on top of the bars, and there she sat, waiting. I eagerly did the same, struggling as my shirt got caught on one of the bolts.

"careful," she told me, looking out towards the sun.

I removed my shirt from the bolt, and sat myself next to her, and moved when my hand touched hers. "what are you doing?" I repeated, looking at her as she inspected me.

her eyebrows wrinkled as she looked at me, "are you asian?" she asked, leaning closer towards my face.

I scoffed, "No, I'm Scottish and Kiwi." she nodded, and turned her head back to the sun.

"momma calls that twilight, when the sun is just about to touch the ground." she glanced at me, and asked me what my name was.

"calum." I whispered, seeing her hair turn golden as the light hit her. "what about-"

"look!" she interrupted, with her little finger pointing to the sky. the sun had skimmed the horizon, and I could see her eyes glow.

"is that what you do, watch the sunset?" I asked, watching her and she jumped from the bar to the ground. I copied her, without falling into my hands like she had.

"yeah, daddy used to watch the sunset with me, he said that when the colors appear in the sky, it's because all the colors try to follow the sun, because they disappear in the dark." she started walking back towards the fence from where we came, and I jogged so I could walk beside her.

"I didn't know that." I confessed, as we slowly reached the fence. I watched her climb over and when she landed on the ground with a smack, I began to climb to.

so waited for me until I jumped, and then she leaned in and whispered in my ear, "my name's noelle."

and off she ran, again.
