Chapter Four
"No pain, no gain you loser." I yelled at Nate as I passed him. He raised his eyebrows at me then picked up the speed. I pushed myself to go faster until I finally reached the finish line. Scarlett's laugh rang out.
"Beaten by a girl. Again. " She teased Nate. He pouted.
"I had a sore knee."
"More like a sore ego." I called.
"It hurt."
"Aww, poor baby want a Band-Aid." I mocked Nate.
"See this is why we aren't friends." He said, collapsing on one of the chairs, taking a sip of his water bottle.
"You sound so much like my best friend." Scarlett chimed in looking between us. "It's actually kind of scary." She laughed but there was still a hint of pain in her eyes.
We'd been at the oval for about an hour now racing each other and talking about random things. The sun was beginning to set and the darkness was creeping in.
"So how come you moved here Nate?" Scarlett asked curiously changing the subject.
"My mother said if I wanted to go with Alyssa I could since I was planning to move out anyway. Plus I think she'd prefer if I was with Alyssa than by myself." He laughed. "I still don't think she quite trusts m-" He got cut off as his phone started to ring. "Sorry," He motioned towards the phone and walked off with the phone at his ear.
"Wonder who that is?" Scarlett mused as we both took in his serious facial expression. He snapped a few words back at the person on the phone. He sighed angrily and hung up the phone.
"Mum just rang." I noticed how he stumbled over the word mum but he continued before I got to think much about it. "She's at the house, I forgot some stuff and she was kind enough to bring it over." There was an underlying tone of anger and panic in his words. A knowing look flashed between us.
"Well, hate to have to leave but..." I trailed off, smiling apologetically.
"Oh it's cool. I probably should be going anyway." Scarlett assured me, standing up to grab her bag and water bottle. "Well my car is around the back," She added pointing to the opposite direction that Nate and I had to go to. "So I'll see you tomorrow?" I nodded at her.
"See you then." I smiled as Nate handed me my bag. We walked over with Nate's arm around my shoulder and his mouth at my ear.
"She is pissed." Nate whispered and I groaned. "She is at the house waiting to have a chat to you. Apparently she doesn't like being hung up on." I swore under my breath as we reached Nate's car. He chucked the keys to me and I slid into the driver's seat.
I let out another string of swear words as I got out of the parking lot. I slammed my hand on the steering wheel and pulled my hand back to do it again but Nate hand grabbed my wrist before I could.
"Calm down Meredith." He instructed as I lowered the hand he had in his grasp. He rubbed his thumb in a circle comfortingly and I took a deep breath. Then it was as if we both looked down at the same time and saw we were essentially holding hands. Our hands leapt away from each other and we both looked away from each other.
"Uh, sorry." Nate stuttered nervously.
"Uh, yeah..." I mumbled trailing off. An awkward silence filled the car until we got back to the house. Outside was a blood red Lamborghini which belonged to the very woman that was inside ready to yell at me. We slowly walked up the stairs, Nate in front of me.
"Nathaniel, darling." The woman who had just appeared from the lounge room enclosed Nate in a hug. Nate held his arms at his side awkwardly. Her dark blonde hair was pulled into a simple French twist and her sharp blue eyes narrowed at me as she released Nate.
