Celeste hummed to a song in her head as I poured pancake batter on the hot pan. The sizzle and smell made my mouth water and turned to smile at Celeste.
My smile dropped quickly as I saw a shadow pass across the window behind her. I blinked to see if it was just a trick of the eye.
I glanced back at the pan to make sure the pancake didn't burn, then back to the window.
It happened again!
The shadow passed across again, and I could make out a humanoid shape from it. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I fought the urge to grab something, anything, and fight whatever it was outside to keep everyone safe.
I looked around the kitchen until my gaze rested on the knife block in the corner. If anything did happen, at least now I would have a plan.
My mind ran through scenarios that could happen and what I would do until I smelled the contents in my pan burning.
I turned to face the stove. Yep, it was black and smoking.
"Shit!"
"What's going on? Why is it burning?"
"It's all good, I just wasn't paying attention." I picked the pan up and moved to the trash, dumping the charred mess into the bin before moving back and trying again.
I checked the window again, but nothing was there.
Whatever was going on, I had a bad feeling about it.
