The young man ties the horse to the heavy manual plow and heads out to the empty field to till the fertile land. With his commands and whistles the strong horses walk and pull the heavy equipment forward. It was going to be a long day. Hours later, y/n comes out to see him, bringing a bucket of water and wooden ladle for him to drink from.

Her own mom made the request. 'Could you check and make sure that kids doin his work properly? Those crops need done right so we get food for the winter. Make sure he isn't making any mistakes... and bring him some water too.' She said to y/n, wiping her hand on her apron.

She looked over the land and saw it mostly complete, looking as well done as she had seen her father do it every year before.

'Theres a lot more land to do before the seeds get thrown. You look tired after all that, here.'

She holds the bucket of water and he takes the ladle, a full amount, and drank from it. The cool water finding its way onto his chin and few drops descend his throat.

He takes another spoonful and splashes the water over his head, surprising her.

'Did I scare you? It's a hot day I need to stay cool right, miss?'

'Honestly you're lucky we got plenty of water or I woulda been mad at you wasting it.' She takes the item from his hand and he laughs at her cute showing of fake anger.

y/n: 'Shouldn't you plow in more narrow rows, the less space you take for crops means more food will grow.'

He smiles again. 'Miss, I don't tell you how to feed those chickens, you don't need to tell me how to plow the land. Trust me I know what I'm doin.'

'Hm. Alright then.'

The two went silent.

GH: 'Ya know I didn't expect your dad to put me on this job while the others help him with the cattle.'

'Well. The animals are very important to him, they take a lot of work but.'

GH: 'But they need big strong guys to steer the horses around.' He says assuming the reason he was excluded from the others. Expressing the idea in a joking manner though it was how he really felt.

She laughs at his well made point. Handling cattle was often done on horseback to lead them into the right pasture and occasionally into town to make money from each cow. Being strong had little to do with the work.

'They may all be doing the more exciting jobs but the one he gave you is the most important.'

He leans over onto the equipment, resting himself on its wooden handles as they talk, he enjoyed listening to her.

'and the crops your planting will be most of our food for the winter. He gave you a very important job.'

'Ya think so? Then I'll be sure to do my best.' He stands up with new found pride.

'I'm going to finish feeding the hens, I'll be back to help you throw the seeds out if you'd like. I wasted your time already It's the least I could do.'

'I'd like that very much miss.' He bows his head, standing up and grabbing hold of the heavy plow. He clicked his tongue and the horses began to move forward on command.

She met him in the shed, he was looking for the bag of seeds and had not become familiar with the small space.

'I brought you a hat, you should keep the sun off your face. This is my dads hat so it is a bit old.'

It was dark colored and very well used, he never really had a hat of his own. He was grateful to receive a gift from her, even if he could only use it for a short time.
