CHAPTER ONE' Sir Reginald Hargreeves is dead. '
☂︎
Sunny Albright stood behind the counter of the bar that she worked at. It was noisy due to the music playing from the old jukebox on one side of the room and the television that was situated above the bar. Some sports game was playing that Sunny wasn't interested in in the slightest, but the patrons seemed to love it. The burly men that were sat on the bar stools would discuss the game in progress, cheering every time their team scored and then would order another round in celebration. It kept Sunny busy, but she quite liked that.
The bar that Sunny worked at was called Joe's Tavern, which was run by Joe himself, having been passed down through his family. He was around the same age as Sunny and he definitely had a bit of a crush on the woman, but Sunny was completely uninterested in him. They were friends and Sunny enjoyed being playful with him, but she never saw him the way he saw her. Joe was a good guy which is why Sunny could never be with him. She didn't want to drag him into the fucked up world of Sunny Albright, the girl from the academy who had lost everything.
Sunny had lived part time at the Umbrella Academy from the age of thirteen and after she left, she moved into an apartment a few blocks away. It was a lot closer to her previous home than she had wanted, but when it came to leaving the one place she had known her whole life, she struggled to do so. One of the reasons why she couldn't just pack up her whole life and move far away was because she couldn't afford to. Working at Joe's didn't necessarily provide her with the funds to do any of that. The bar was only a few minutes from her apartment so she was able to save on travel, but her rent was extremely high even for the crappy apartment she lived in.
The other main reason why Sunny didn't leave was for sentimental reasons. Reasons that she would deny to anyone who asked her. She hated being sentimental. It was weak and Sunny's whole life was spent proving she was not weak. That was something her mentor, Reginald Hargreeves, had drilled into her since she was thirteen years old.
Weakness was not something one of the Hargreeves children were ever allowed to possess, but Sunny wasn't a Hargreeves. Despite being born on the first of October, 1989, she hadn't been adopted by Reginald Hargreeves at birth like the others had. That wasn't for a lack of trying from him. Mr Hargreeves had offered Sunny's mother, Rose, a large sum of money in exchange for her daughter, but Rose couldn't bear to give up her only child. She had been trying for so long to have a baby, but she hadn't found the right guy yet. Luckily for her, a miracle happened and Sunny was born. No one could explain how it happened, but Rose was just excited to finally be a mother.
