CHAPTER TWO' Thanks for not starting the party without me. '
☂︎
Sunny Albright arrived at Joe's Tavern, ready to work her shift. Joe had made Sunny go home after they saw the news that Reginald Hargreeves had died the night before. Sunny didn't see the point as she wasn't at all upset by the news, more shocked if anything, but a night off sounded nice as she had been working nonstop all week. Joe had told her to take all the time she needed and so he assumed she'd take a few days off, but Sunny was ready to get back to work as soon as she could.
The bar was still closed when Sunny arrived and the door was locked. She knew Joe was inside as she could see the lights on. Sunny knocked on the door a couple of times and a few seconds later, the door opened to reveal a confused looking Joe. Sunny halfheartedly smiled at the man before pushing past him and walking into the building. "Morning," she said in her usual sweet tone. Joe shook his head, closing the door and following Sunny towards the bar.
"What are you doing here?" Joe asked as Sunny put her bag down on the counter. Sunny ignored him as she began her normal routine that had become like second nature to her. "Sunny," Joe said sternly. He watched with his arms folded across his chest as the blonde finally stopped moving and turned to face him.
"I'm working," Sunny told him, bluntly. "It's called having a job and having bills to pay." Her rent was due and she still needed money to live, so she couldn't afford to miss work just because someone she once knew had died. She had no emotional connection to that man so his death didn't have a huge impact on her. She was already completely over it.
Joe sighed. "I get that, but you need time to grieve, Sun," he replied. He leaned against the bar as Sunny got back to work. "Isn't there going to be a funeral or something?" Joe asked which made Sunny freeze for a second. She hoped Joe hadn't noticed her reaction, but he had.
Sunny, who had been leaning forward to pull something out of a box, stood back up straight. "No, there isn't," she lied, but Joe could see right through it. He had known her long enough to realise when she was lying to him. Joe noticed as Sunny glanced over at her bag, a small white piece of card poking out of the open pocket at the front. They both jumped forward towards it, Joe managing to grab it first. Sunny let out a groan as Joe began to read the text on the card. "Give it back," she demanded, but Joe ignored her as he continued to read.
As he finished reading, Joe looked up and faced Sunny. "No funeral, huh? Because this invitation says that there is a memorial service for Sir Reginald Hargreeves... today," Joe commented, raising his eyebrow at the blonde. Sunny sighed. There was going to be a funeral, but she didn't want to go because of three reasons. One, she swore she'd never go back to the academy ever again, two, she hated Mr Hargreeves, and three, she really didn't want to have to come face to face with Diego again if he was going to show up.
