Chapter 9

From Maddie and Zach's POVs

Maddison
It was 5am when Zach pulled his rav4 into the nearest car park of the hospital with the screech of tyres and I don't know who leapt from the car the fastest but we were both rushing through the double doors of the Hospital Emergency department at the same time.
At the counter Zach pushed in front of another couple leaning over the triage counter and asked where the cop who was involved in the accident earlier on tonight was.
The Triage nurse looked at him and said he had to get in line and wait his turn.
"Zach". I said softly grabbing at his arm but he shrugged it off and continued staring at the triage nurse impatiently . I met eyes with the woman holding the crying toddler who's turn it was to be seen to and apologised with my eyes, she had smiled and said it was fine for us to go before her.
"See". Zach yelled. " So where is he? I want answers".
A security guard dressed in black walked up to us then and told Zach he had to calm down.
"The fuck I will". Zach said crossly. "That is my brother we are asking about. My twin brother".
"For fucks safe mate". A skinny looking middle aged man sitting waiting to be seen piped up " He is only asking where his brother is. It isn't rocket science".
Suddenly two police officers walked out through some blue doors beyond the Emergency counter and motioned towards Zach and I. I didn't recognise them but they were definitely older senior police officers. They made their way over to us and asked to speak to us privately.
"You can use that room". The triage nurse leaned forward over the counter pointing to a single blue door across the room.
The officer with grey hair nodded and ushered us toward it.
My heart was pounding. I looked up at the clock on the wall above the door. It was 5.23am. Exactly 50 odd mins since Zach burst into my bedroom telling me that two police were at my front door and there had been an incident involving Zane and Matt.
I sat down on a lime green two seater sofa next to Zach who grabbed my hand tightly in his and I drifted off to Zach waking me.

Zach
It had been a good night out. It felt like I hadn't been asleep yet when I rolled over in bed and heard the sound of banging on a door. I couldn't work out if it was my door or a neighbours and it kept up so I through off my bed covers, sat up and got out of bed. I had caught up with Ella again and she started to stir next to me in bed.
"What's that?". She mumbled stretching an arm out across my bare chest. Her eyes still closed.
"Don't know. Wait here while I go see". I told her. I walked across to the room, grabbed a tshirt off the hook on the back of bedroom door and slid the tshirt over my head.
The knock sounded again as I downed the stairs two at a time and walked down the hallway to the heavy front door.
Switching the front porch light switch on I opened the door and came face to face with two police officers.
Fuck! Was my first thought. Having police knocking on your door in the early hours of the morning is never a good sign. My heart started pounding! Mum? Dad? My sister?.... my thoughts didn't even turn to Zane.
"Zach .......". I didn't even hear my last name either. What I did hear though it sounded muffled was what followed next.
"Your brother has been hurt on duty......"
"He was shot....."
"He is at the PA Hospital".
The next thing I did was think of Maddie.
Fuck! Someone needed to tell her and it needed to be me.

Maddie
Zach and I were ushered into a small private room with the two police officers. The older looking one with grey hair told us to take a seat on one of the two lime green sofa's near a window while the dark haired officer closed the door behind us. We sat down on the sofa right in front of the window as both officers sat on the other one. Zach grabbed my hand squeezing it tightly.
The grey haired officer cleared his throat then started speaking.
"Sorry to meet you both under these circumstances"
"What happened?" Zach asked.
"Your twin brother and his partner were caught up in a police chase tonight and while intercepting the offenders there was a car a accident due to a shooting fatality.
At that moment My heart started beating ridiculously fast. Shots. Accidental fatality? Mg no, not Zane.
"Zane?"I gasped and almost didn't recognise my own voice.
"And you are?". The dark haired officer looked up at me and asked pausing writing in a little black leather notepad.
"Zane's fiancé, Maddison "  Zach answered for me.
The officer nodded and started jotting down our information into his note pad. He obviously only wrote our names as he closed his book then and put both it and his pen into his shirt pocket.
"The fatality wasn't your brother, fiancé...." The grey haired officer looked to Zach and then I.
It was then a I realised it was________ Poor ________. They had only just started their family.
"What happened to Zane.?". Zach asked.
"He was hurt when the car was slammed into the tree. He is in surgery right now".
Zach nodded taking in everything we were being told as was I.
"Can I get you both a tea or coffee?" The dark haired officer asked standing up and walking over to a coffee and tea making machine that sat in the corner.
"Sure. Thanks" Zach nodded. The officer turned to me but I didn't want to drink anything so I shook my head. All I wanted was to know was to see Zane.
"Do you have contact details for your parents Zach?.".
"Sure but only a mobile phone. They are overseas holidaying in the Mediterranean." Zach pulled his phone out of his jeans pocket and started scrolling thru his contacts for his parents number.
