Eira's POV

The Middle Ages, also known as the 'Dark Age.' It's known specifically for it's total death of all culture and the Black Plague. Not really a time that sounds pleasant to live in, but, shortly after the death of the feudal system began (progressively, not all at once) the Renaissance, or 'rebirth.' It was a total rejuvination of culture and art, a beautiful time full of scientific discoveries, new and spectacular art of all kinds, and new cutting edge thinkers.

It's a highly regarded time in history, and most people know what you're talking about if you mention it, even if they have little to no historical knowledge. I, of course, know quite a bit about the Renaissance, being some sort of academic nerd myself, but sometimes people have little 'Renaissances' of their own. A spark of information that drives you to try something new or learn a new skill or perfect an already known one, but I like to think that they not only apply to spiritual, artistic, and scientific things.

They could also apply to things such as a relationship.

Now, don't get me wrong, Matthias and I never really had a 'Dark Ages.' I mean, aside from my whole obsession with his Secret Admirer, we had a picture perfect relationship. Even when he was being really stupid. But in my own opinion we needed a little 'Renaissance.'

Apparently, Matthias had the same idea, as he asked me out on a date.

"How would you feel about a date?" he asked me, strutting up to my locker with a smirk on his face. Cheeky little idiot, I thought.

"One, will there be hot chocolate?" I asked, smiling brightly. It was fun giving him a hard time, even if I had absolutely no reason to. But I really had had a craving for hot chocolate after the first flurry of snow, two days previous.

"If you'd like," he replied suavely, not missing a beat.

"And when will be be on this, so-called date?"  He laced his fingers with my mine. It certainly was an interesting sensation, that of holding hands, and it was a new-ish sensation to me too. I had never previously held hands with anyone really, not even my family, but Matthias had taken to a recent liking of the subtle but loving expression.

"Today, after school. That is-if you don't have previous engagements." I raised an eyebrow.

"I'd be happy to join you." He smiled and dropped my hand.

"Well, I'll see you at lunch, Eira." He saluted me with two fingers and then walked away towards his history class. Near the beginning of the year I had memorized his schedule, so I always knew where he was going. Which did come in handy sometimes, as he did often forget his schedule.

School, as always, was pretty dull. A little homework, a little drama, a few inappropriate jokes, but today I couldn't really focus on it. I was too busy focuing on what I could possibly be doing after school.

Where could he be taking me where there was hot chocolate? Did he even have a plan?

Who was I kidding? Matthias never has a plan. He just wings it, picking up the pieces as he goes.

Once school was over I practically ran towards Matthias' locker. If it hadn't been against the rules, I probably would have ran. Matthias quirked an eyebrow at me when he spotted me waiting at his locker.

"I'm not going to leave without you. Actually, I'm not going to be able to leave if you don't get off of my locker." I quickly readjusted so that I was not on his locker.

He pulled out his jacket and backpack and textbooks in a tediously slow manner, occasionally asking me to hold something for him when he didn't have enough hands. I had a feeling that he was going slowly on purpose, but I didn't hold it against him. I would've too.
