We drove out to a lake. It was quiet and peaceful and completely mesmerizing. Taylor had made sandwiches and stolen a bottle of wine and two wine glasses and set up this blanket on a rock that we immediately laid on to stare at the sun set.
It was beautiful and we didn't have to talk. We just laid there looking at the sky and smiled and held hands and enjoyed just being together.
I liked just being with her. Near her. Next to her. It made me feel alive. Like everything I was and ever would be was reflected in her eyes. Like she was the truth and up until I met her my entire life had been a lie.
I turned to her about an hour in. I was on my side with my elbow supporting me, my hand on my cheek. I reached over with my free hand and started playing with a loose string on her pants.
"Tay?" She turned to me, opening her eyes. They looked so blue in this light. I smiled and ducked down to plant a kiss on her mouth.
"What's going to happen to us? If we keep doing what we're doing?" I asked her. I didn't want to end this. To stop this. This attraction. This madness. It wasn't right on so many levels but I felt like I belonged to her and she belonged to me. We were each others.
"Well I don't know. Hopefully you'll still want me after the sex stops being so great." I laughed. "That could never happen." She nodded and smiled up at me. "You're right. I'm much too good."
She thought I was kidding. She always did. She didn't believe me when I told her she blew my mind. Every time we had sex and every time I had the energy to think straight and actually speak, I told her that, but she still didn't believe me. She told me I flatter her too much.
I sighed and laid back down. "Still. It would be cool to date after high school, right?" I asked with a spike in my heart rate. I knew it was wishful thinking. I knew it was bound to go nowhere, but I still said it.
Anything to make her see how much she means to me.
"Yeah it would be. We'd get married like Portia and Ellen."
"You'd be Ellen. I'm much to pretty to be her." Taylor laughed and turned to me, eyes sparkling. She wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me to her; under her.
My heart rate spiked again as she planted a kiss on my neck and worked her way up my jaw and finally to my lips.
I laughed as she did this but kissed her back getting more and more into it with every second passing. I could never get bored of kissing her.
She pulled away then. "We don't need to be like them, you know. We can be ourselves and go from there. We could totally get married."
I smiled. "Yeah? We could, huh?" She let go of me and reached over to get the basket, pulling out our sandwiches, handing one to me.
"Eat." She ordered, grinning.
So I did. I ate the sandwiches and watched the sun set with her eating at my side and once it had set and we had been quiet for at least forty-five minutes, she pulled out the wine and I took a glass and watched her pour a little in.
"We have to be careful with this. We have to drive back." I nodded. "Yeah. I know." I took a sip as flavor exploded in my mouth. It was bitter and sweet, sour and salty. It tasted divine. Just as I imagined wine would.
"This stuff is good," I commented. She turned to me. "Yeah. I know. I used to sneak bottles of it in seventh grade when Hannah used to spend the night at my house."
"I though Hannah was the good girl." I said. Taylor shook her head. "No. Not really. I mean, she's best friends with me, she can't be the good girl."
I smiled and leaned over, resting my head on her shoulder. "Any girl would turn bad for you, Tay." I whispered, taking another sip of my drink before focusing on the stars above us as they started to get visible.
"Was everything really okay today when you called?" Taylor asked suddenly. I shut my eyes and try and salvage the peace and quiet.
I didn't want to think of earlier today. I didn't want to think of it ever, especially not with Taylor.
"Yes. Why are you always asking that?" I asked her. She turned to me and I lifted my head off of her shoulder. "Because you were crying. You always call me and sound so upset like you want to tell me something and then you just switch it off like you've changed your mind."
I stayed quiet.
"I mean, it's okay, I guess, if you don't want to tell me everything about your life, it's not like we're dating or anything, but you act as if I'm not already here for you. As if I wouldn't care about your problems."
"Would you?" I asked in a quiet voice. "Care? About my problems, I mean?" She nodded and took hold of my hand. "Yes, absolutely. I would care."
I turned away from her and her sincere and somber look and drank the rest of my wine and made a face.
"I can't tell you about earlier today, but I can tell you everything else that happens. I owe you that much."
"No, you don't owe me anything, Tal. I'm just really concerned for you and I really care about you."
"I owe you a lot of things." I told her. "That's not true. We aren't arguing about it. You are your own person and you make decisions and you have a conscious choice to tell me what you want to tell me. I can't make you. I just wish you would, that's all."
I leaned over and kissed her cheek. "You're so wonderful, Taylor. I'm sorry for being so guarded all the time. I know that's not what you want, since you're an open book."
She only smiled at me and lifted my hand up and kissed the back of it lightly.
"I like you the way you are, guarded and all." She whispered before kissing my cheek, like I had kissed hers, before turning her head towards the sky.
"Let's watch the stars."
So we did.
