Talia's POV

The car felt frighteningly tiny with Lucas in it. There wasn't enough room between us and there wasn't enough oxygen. I was almost chocking on the tension between us. He wasn't happy about something, and while that never used to bother me, it made me feel small and guilty.

It wasn't me, to be scared shitless, but a lot had changed between the time I last assessed myself and now.  I had become someone's shit girlfriend. Never in a million years did I think that was going to happen.

"So you have a meeting?" He said through a tight jaw. I nodded, twisting the hem of my skirt. "What about?" He asked. He had this spiraling tendency. A spiraling tendency was when he asked awfully vague questions and they got deeper and deeper until he knew exactly what was going to be said and what was going to happen. He'd always been that way, but now that his spiraling was directed at me, I didn't want to understand his need to just know.

"Uh...um, the meeting thing for valedictorian. I...I have to go over some things with the principal. Certain guide lines." Lucas nodded once. "Do you want me to pick you up after? We could grab a bite to eat before you meet your mom for chemo." I shook my head quickly. "No. My stepdads picking me up."

It sounded too eager to my own ears, but after it was out, it was out. There was nothing to take it back. I decided it would be fine. Whatever happened would happen.

His jaw flexed and then he turned to me with a sickly sweet smile plastered on his lips. "Give me a kiss." He said. It wasn't over the top demanding, but I still felt kind of forced. I leaned towards him and pecked him lightly on his cheek. As I was going to get out he took my arm and forced me back to him.

His lips smashed down onto mine, and I struggled against his hold as he kissed me. When I finally got loose I slapped him and wiped my mouth clean of his saliva.

"You're an asshole, Lucas!" I shout at him, angrily fumbling for the door handle. But his hand took hold of my arm again and shoved me back against my chair. His other hand went around my neck and squeezed.

"If I were you, I would quite being a bitch, Talia. Everybody knows that bitches get stitches, after all." He squeezed one last time before letting me go. I gasped for air as I opened the door and almost fell out, slamming the door and running across the parking lot into the school.

Once inside I leaned my forehead against the cold metal of the door and focused on breathing in and out, in and out. Crying was on my to-do list but right now, I had a meeting to attend to.

I wiped my stinging eyes and shook my hands out to rid them of tension before heading to the office, where I would be meeting with my principal, Mr. Walker.

Mr. Walker was a wisp of a man. He always wore cowboy boots and blue jeans. He also wore cowboy hats and big buckle belts. His red and rosy cheeks were plump and round, kind of like you would imagine Santa Claus's. He was nice enough, with his southern hospitality and charm.

I entered his office after a soft knock in his door. He smiled and waved me in. He gestured for me to sit in the single chair in front of his huge oak wood desk.

I did just that, waiting for him to speak. "Ms. McKenzie! How nice to see you!" I smiled. "Hello, Mr. Walker." I said in my cheeriest voice ever.

"Now, let's get down to business, shall me?" I shrugged.

"How's that speech coming along?"

I hadn't thought about the speech since they mentioned a speech to me--two months ago. I figured I would give myself a couple months to warm myself up to the idea of being valedictorian.
