My Only Escape For Freedom

Staring up at the clouds has never felt so relaxing. As I'm watching the clouds change shape as my younger brother Sam plays on the playground, nothing feels more peaceful. The soft green grass tickles my fingers as the gentle wind blows by me. I have this feeling, that I haven't felt for so long. I feel.... free. safe. And happy. These three words are something that I thought I would never feel anymore.

My world of fantasy disappeared in an instint when I seen a familiar face standing over me.

"Hey Mels! Stuck in your own world again?" Liam giggles.

I got up and gave him a good lil' punch in the arm.

"Harddy Har Har. Very funny Mr. Knowitall." As I stuck my tongue out at him.

"Well your lucky it wasn't Mrs. Marley who was standing over you." he smirks.

Mrs. Marley is Pinedale High School's worst grade 10 mathamatics teacher in the history of math teachers. You can already tell I'm not a fan of her. She is currently my math teacher and lets just say, she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Liam had her as his grade 10 math teacher also. He was pretty lucky enough to even get the credit. Mrs. Marley was always angry and if you get caught even daydreaming. Your dead. And she always teaches us something completely different each day. So basically, she's a pretty bad teacher.

"Oh god, I would be finished for sure this time!" I said with a half smile.

"Your such a troublemaker." Liam laughed

"Pfft, I'm nothing compared to you!" I snapped

"Oh really?" Liam smirks.

He rushes over and throws me over his shoulder and starts to run around the playground.

"Liam Carter get me down this minute!" I screeched

"Not until you take that back!"

"No way! Then I would be lying!" I giggled

Liam starts to twirl around making me feel dizzy.

"Liam stop! I don't feel so good." I said weakly

Liam immediately puts me down, causing me to trip.

"I'm sorry Mels, are you alright?" His worried blue eyes staring into mine

"I'm okay. Sort of.." Liam can be pretty protective over me. I kinda like it.

"We'll, just make sure you don't barf on me or something." Liam laughs

I gave him a good punch in the arm. A little harder this time

"Ow! Ok, I guess I deserve that one." Liam winks.

We hear my brother giggling with joy as he caught a little monarch butterfly.

"Melody check it out! I've never seen this type of bird before!" Sam squirmed with pure happiness.

I laughed hysterically. Wow. I never thought I had it in me. "No Sam, that's a butterfly. But they sure are pretty creatures." I said.

"Oh. Well their kinda just like a bird! They fly like a bird, and their always free!"

"Free." I muttered under my breath. "Oh if only it were so for us."

Liam starts kicking some pepples. "I have to go, I promised my mom I will be home for 5." He starts to blush. I wonder if he even realizes his face is beat red.

"I'll see you around Mels." As he walks away.

My heart sanked as my mind returned to reality. All the happiness and freedom I felt for a good long hour, has slipped away. And probably will never come back.

"C'mon Sam, we should be heading back too. Dad will be wondering where we are." I said with a huge sigh of disappointment . It would've been nice if Liam could've stayed a bit longer.

Sam's beautiful broad smile has faded into a sad frown.

"I don't want to go back. I don't like it there." Sam said.

I stare into my brothers sad blue eyes as I got down on my knees to be the same height as him.

"Look... I know you don't want to go home. But you know what will happen if we stay here. I want you to be safe." I exclaimed.

Its horrible to think that were not even safe in our own home. I thought sadly.

I take my brother's small, cold hands and together, we walked home. Where our abusive father awaits.
