It was going to be a typical day for Lane, or so she thought. She had no idea that she was going to get a life-changing assignment. This assignment would be special. It would give her a chance to do what she loved best, to solve crime through numbers, technology, and facts. Lane had a very mundane morning. She had had a nice morning so far because she arrived early to work. Arriving early somewhere was Lane's favorite feeling. She went to the regular morning briefing.
"Good day detectives", the captain laughed. She was lucky to have him as a captain. Even if he was a bit sexist at times. He was a jolly old man and he didn't know he was offending her. At least he knew she existed, unlike the entire detective squad. "Today I want Morgenthau and the rest of the detectives on this case. Grand Theft Auto. Can you believe it? I need you to investigate it. But not you Lane, I have something else for you. Dismissed." He had something for Lane? She never had a case all to herself. She hoped it wasn't something on the field. What if it was on the field. What was she to do? She liked doing math, calculating, and forensics. She could do all that from her desk. She really hoped it could be something she could do from her desk.
"Lane, come over here", he said. She walked up to him nervously, hoping it was possible to do it from her desk.
"Do you have a case for me?", she asked. He pulled out four files.
"Lane. These are some files from four other precincts", he said. He opened one up and began flipping through it, "A lady detective in Brooklyn was investigating a murder".
"Ok", Lane said. Why did he have to say, lady detective? Why not just a detective. Whatever, it didn't matter.
"It's been two weeks and she can't find a killer. She has no evidence. The killer was a ghost. All she saw was the letter S drawn in blood", he said.
"Ok", she said smiling, this had just gotten interesting.
"Take this other lady detective in Manhattan. She and her five dogs, can you believe it?", he laughed, "Well, they were called after a threat had been sent to a Broadway theatre. She went and her dogs sniffed up these explosives. They were arranged to form the letter L. This other lady in Queens found packets of cocaine arranged in the letter U. This other lady in the Bronx found a robbed apartment trashed, but it formed the letter B''.
"Interesting", she said, pressing her fingers against her lips, "An S in Brooklyn, and L in Manhattan, a U in Queens, and a B in the Bronx".
"Well, I was talking to the captain's of these precincts and they told me that they needed to figure this out", he said, "Well, I told them one of my detectives was smart as a whip. Maybe she could crack it. I arranged for you to meet with these ladies next week, hopefully, you can solve it with them".
"Thank you captain", she said smiling. He smiled and walked away. She really didn't want to meet with new people, but the fact that he was so confident and believed in her, it sent her over the moon. She kept examining these for letters.
S, L, U, B.
S, L, U, B.
Those words repeated in her head. What did they mean? She didn't know. All she knew was that three talented women were going to solve the case and get the recognition they deserved.
