"E-Eh?" Jennie almost spit out her last bit of corn-dog.
"Be my best friend." Lisa reiterated.
"Koma-yah."
"Hey, I'm not a kid."
Jennie chuckled, she barely knew Lisa, and she's pretty sure Lisa barely knew her. For her to ask this question is so out of the ordinary.
She wondered what Lisa's intentions are with her to ask her this. Was this a dare? Is Lisa planning on doing something more wicked?
"You are asking me to be your best friend?" Jennie scoffed.
Lisa nodded.
"You're kidding?"
Lisa shook her head.
"Ha." Jennie sighed. "Let's say I said yes, what will you do for me."
"I'll take good care of you as my best friend."
"That's the standard." Jennie crossed her arms.
Lisa stood in front of her contemplating what to say. "I will walk you home?"
Jennie shook her head. "Not enough."
"But you like being with me."
"Says who?" Jennie pointed to Lisa with the corn-dog stick.
"The bare stick you are pointing me with." Lisa took the stick and bit off the remaining crusts. "You finished it a long time ago but you didn't leave."
"That doesn't mean I like being with you."
"Do you?"
"Hmm." Jennie thought for a little. Although it was a short meeting, she was glad she came here, this was an interesting meeting. The clouds above her head were clearing and the sun was peeking through.
"Never mind that, so be my best friend."
"That doesn't sound like a request anymore."
"Nope, it's a demand. You're my best friend now."
"Where was the shy Lisa just a couple minutes ago?"
"Best friends are not shy with each other."
"We are not best friends." Jennie pointed between her and Lisa.
"Worth a try." Lisa looked dejected.
"Let's try this."
"Try what?"
Jennie patted the space next to her. "Why don't you earn being my best friend." Jennie couldn't believe she would say such a thing. What is there to lose though, her life was as dull as an overused blade. This was the most interesting thing to happen to her in almost, well, since she started high school.
"What do you mean?" Lisa sat down.
"You say you want to be my best friend?"
Lisa nodded.
"Earn it."
"How do I do that?"
Jennie could see Lisa's eyebrows rise under her bangs, which were perfectly cut, as straight as a horizontal 180 degree.
"Well, you said before you'll walk me home. Let's start with that."
"I don't have time today, I can walk you home tomorrow."
"We live in same apartment complex buildings." Jennie sees Lisa around the neighborhood sometimes, she was with either her mom or she was with her friends.
"When I say I want to walk you home, I mean to your door, our buildings are about ten minutes apart by walking. If I don't go home in the next minute, I'll be late again."
"Best friends make sacrifices."
"You really want me to sacrifice my life?"
"Tick, tock." Jennie clicked her tongue to indicate the second's hand on a clock.
"Fine, let's go then."
Jennie took her time to clean up her space to taunt Lisa.
"Hurry Jennie."
"Hey, just because we are doing this doesn't mean you get to drop the honorifics." Jennie scolded. She doesn't really mind if honorifics are being used or not; however, she barely knew Lisa and respect still needs to be in place.
"Sorry, let's hurry, I don't want another lecture from my mother."
Lisa grabbed Jennie's wrist then took off.
"Slow down!"
"Can't, if I am late again, my mom won't let me do any thing after school," Lisa took a breath, "Which includes not being able to walk you home."
They see the tall building showing up at the tip of the hill. Lisa takes a look at her watch. She's going to be late again. She let go of Jennie's wrist once she got to her building.
"I can't take you up this time, bye!" Lisa ran off to the direction of her apartment building.
Jennie laughed at her silliness. Maybe her life wouldn't be as dull anymore if she let's Lisa become her best friend. Was it just this easy though? Have someone ask to be best friends with you and then poof, you're best friends? Jennie still questioned Lisa's intentions. Why did she choose her? Making friends who are older than you is rare and looked down on, at least at this school.
The next morning when Jennie left her apartment, she saw Lisa waiting outside.
"Lisa. What are you doing here?"
"Walking you to school."
"How long were you waiting?"
They walk towards the school. Passing other students along the way who were staring.
"Not long."
"Do you really want this?"
"Why would I wake up extra early to not want this?"
"Okay, you better not complain when we become best friends."
"I'm a phase closer to us being best friends each step I take."
The whole day the two girls thought of each other. Jennie wondered what Lisa would do next to earn being her best friend, Lisa thought of ways to get the older girl to be her best friend.
Time had passed by quickly. This was the fastest school had passed for Jennie. Each day seemed like forever since it was boring, but her thoughts kept her so preoccupied, it ended in a blink of an eye. Lisa waited in front of Jennie's class. She greeted her other seniors that was leaving the class then she saw Jennie leave from the back door.
"Hey."
"I'm tired Lisa, I just took a test."
"Best friends cheer each other up."
"So?"
"So, let's walk around the park around our apartment."
"That's gonna make me more tired."
They exit the school walking towards their apartment buildings.
"Come on, if we are going to become best friends, the other half has to try too."
"It's already night, what could we do there."
"I'll buy you delicious food and—"
"I'm in!"
"Bring up food first, noted."
