the black-ridden sky was lit up by a waxing crescent moon, and stars were beginning to reveal themselves to the naked eye. everything around keiji and kohana seemed motionless, as if frozen in place; no wind to move the bare tree branches. the only sound that could be heard was the distant chirping of crickets hiding in the silhouetted bushes. the tranquility of the night was like something out of a dream.
the calm before the storm.
keiji aspired to have this stillness enter his mind. his mind was spinning with questions that he wished he had enough strength to ask. he liked to imagine the night to represent kohana; serene and, in his eyes, perfect.
his thoughts were interrupted by the same girl which had buried her way into the depths of his head.
"mmmm, that dessert was so yummy!" she happily praised. she brought her small hands up to her cheeks and began humming to herself.
keiji simply chuckled. he found it strange how she was able to stay so energetic, even when she knew she would soon be gone. just as she saw him as elysian, he viewed her as orphic.
"i'm glad you enjoyed it," he replied , a small smile planted on his face. "i'm curious. how are you still managing to smile, despite knowing what the future holds ?"
"hm?" she glanced at him for a short second with a baffled expression. she then giggled to herself and looked up at the sky, pointing above her.
"i'm joining the stars soon. i don't want to have any regrets and i want to be able to introduce myself without having to say what i wished i'd done while i was still alive, here with you."
"so you believe in the afterlife."
she brought her hand back to her side, and her eyes began to glint under the moonlit sky. "i guess i do. i find it quite calming, to think that there's another life waiting for me up there. it seems stupid to live a life on earth without having any reward for it, don't you think?"
the crickets stopped creating noise, just for a second. the world around them had truly stopped. the only two people who mattered, at this moment. were keiji and kohana. keiji's eyes were still fixated on the millions of stars, and he had a somewhat relieved smile on his face as he plainly replied,
"yeah."
she cocked her head with a seemingly amused smile visible on her porcelain face. his face, for the first time in three days, held a relaxed expression. on the other hand, kohana was masking her guilt through her smile.
they truly were polar opposites; their moods always seemed to be the opposite of the other's, but to both of them, they still felt like home.
