December 1, 1976- Daegu, South Korea.
It was the second consecutive day of wails. His legs collected to his chest were bandaged around his torso like a toffee by the worn out woolen scarf that barely served a purpose.
The sole source of warmth in the pouring despair were the pair of arms that were wrapped around his little frame and the pair of legs that he was sitting on, rocking him back and forth.
"Shh.. Baby I'm sorry. Please."
His cries only got louder but who was to blame? That is only how a barely year old baby expressed hunger pertaining to two days of not having a drop of milk.
The pitter patter of the rain on top of the tin lid of the garbage-can that was held over his head had begun to slow down.
And when the additional rambunctions started to weigh off, only then did the little one hear shallow sniffles making his own wails come to a stop so abrupt, it felt like someone had pressed a switch off.
He craned his neck up to see the woman he sees everyday drenched from head to toe (except the small patch on thighs where he sat, sheltered under the lid.)
Even though the downpour had stopped a while ago, new water droplets seem to appear from nowhere and fall on the skin of the 'woman'.
Shrugging the blotchy cloth off, the boy with wide curious eyes shakily stands up on the thighs and balances himself by fisting her collar into his tiny fist. The other hand, chubby little fingers harbouring dust in every crack, reaches out and presses on the woman's eye. The hand, almost the size of her eye, starts to clumsily rub left and right in an attempt to wipe off the raining eyes like he has always seen the woman do to him.
"You d-don't deserve t-this, my diamond. I'm sorry I'm so sick t-that I can't e-even feed m-my baby. I-I'm s-sorry your Eomma can't p-provide f-for you. I'm sorry."
she sobs louder now scooping in the boy from his tushy and squeezing him in an embrace, causing the water to seep into the child's clothes as well."m-maah"
In comes the sob-stopping switch. Like mother, like son. She retracted back agape looking back at the eyes that were practically bigger than the small adorable face.
"W-what did you j-just say?"
"M-maa"
"Oh god- oh dear god- say that again. Baby-y say that again."
"Maah!" the woman smiled, then chuckled, then chuckled again, then snickered tearing up and hugged him tight.
"Oh.. Yes! I am that. I'm your Ma. Oh baby!" she laughs out loud to which the boy giggles mirroring, two lower front teeth peak out while the lips stretch far apart like a box reveal the entire toothless gumpad.
"You're my diamond. I'm gonna make sure you h-have a good life before I h-have to go!"

"Okay baby, one last." she emptied the carton into it's small lid, jerking it to milk out the even the last drop and brought it to the boy's lips who slurped it loudly then giggled at the odd sound.
"I know it has gone a little sour but that is all the garbage-bin had today." she wiped the corner of his mouth with the scarf and weaved her fingers through his hair.
"Now, will you be my good big boy and practice once again?" smiling at the boy who nodded vigorously, she picked him up from her lap and made him sit in front of her, suddenly all serious.
"Okay, ready?" he nodded his head violently again, the freshly made hair falling on the eyes.
"Hey! Little boy! Who are you?" She deeped her voice and frowned at the boy who merely picked up the paper by his feet with chubby grabby hands.
