Chapter 1.
It had a body like a potato and had long thin limbs that ended in oversized hands and feet. It had a knobbly nose and little eyes. It was what I called a earthman. It was dancing on top of the teacher in front of the class. It was annoying and distracting. The teacher didn’t notice anything. Nobody in the class did, except for the me, I was the only one who could See.
Another one sat in the corner of the class, cheering the earthman on. This one had a thin, frail looking body and a gigantic head. This one, too, was not bigger than my chair, but odd nonetheless. All that kept it from flying away was a ball and chain bound around his body. I had called this one fittingly “airhead”. Those two were always around in this classroom.
What was the teacher talking about again? Shit, something about different formulae for different types of mathematical problems or something like that. Who cared? It was math.
I looked at the earthman again. It was still dancing his ridiculous dance. I almost laughed out loud when the earthman showed the airhead how “manly” he was. I couldn’t see it from my seat but it mustn’t have been impressive because the air head spit on it.
A tiny knife appeared in the earthmans right hand, he jumped at the airhead. The airhead was ready for him and swung his iron ball at him. A fight ensued.
“…ASH!” somebody yelled in my ear.
I looked up and saw my friends Jake and Kaylee looking weird at me.
“yeah, what is it?” I asked.
“the bell went like 5 minutes ago, and here you are staring at nothing” Kaylee said.
“Huh? I didn’t hear it go” I said.
“No you were almost sleeping in your chair” Jake said amused. “come on, we need to get going. We still need to get the video and the food for tonight.”
Ah, right, it was Friday. Movie day. The three of us come together at somebody’s house and would watch a random movie. It sounded dull but when you had popcorn and a corny and outdated movie with the worst special effects possible, it became very funny. We would all shout comments at the T.V. while stuffing ourselves with unhealthy food.
“Ah, right, what time? At who’s place?” I asked.
“well, last time was at Kaylee’s” Jake said “So next is your turn.”
Ah crap. I hadn’t cleaned up the living room.
“Sorry guys, could you guys get the stuff” I asked with puppy dog eyes “I still have to clean the place.”
They were no match for the eyes and gave in.
“Sure” Kaylee said. Somewhat too enthusiastically. I looked at her. She glanced at Jake. Ah, so THAT was going on. “Come on Jake, lets go” She said. “See you later Ash.” And with that They left.
I packed my books and also left. At the door I saw something in the corner of my eyes, I look what it was. The earthman stood victoriously over the airhead. With the knife in it’s head the airhead turned into a small glowing ball, as big as the top of a thumb. The earthman grabbed the thing and then just ate it. He glowed a little and then grew a few inches. Content he looked around the classroom.
That is when I fled the room and ran out the school to my car. That was dangerous. Like I just saw, if THEY noticed I could see them, they would attack me, extract my soul –at least, I think the little glowing ball was a soul- and eat it. I saw it happen to a lot of other faeries and the like. One moment they all would be best friends dancing and having fun and the next moment they’d attack each other, just for the soul of the other that would make them bigger.
Really, you could say I hated the faeries. I tried to stay as far from them as possible.
When I was younger they amused me with their tricks, my mother thought I was crazy and had send me to all kinds of doctors. When I was around 9 I finally realized that I shouldn’t be able to see the friends I had, no wonder my classmates looked weird at me. I wanted to fit in with the rest and I started to ignore the faerie friends I had made and tried to play with the normal human kids.
At first the faeries tried to get me to notice them, but slowly, one by one, they disappeared. 2 Years later I had no faerie friends left. Around that time I also learned to fear the faeries that had once been my friends. And one year after that I moved across the country.
There I had a complete new start. No one knew I could see things they couldn’t. There I made new friends: Kaylee and Jake. They had been my friends ever since. I even had a boyfriend once, but that guy only dated me to make his ex jealous. One week later he broke up with me and went back with his ex. Bastard.
I drove home in ten minutes. My house was rather small, but we had a big garden. My mother’s car stood in the open garage. My father’s was not. I parked my car in the driveway and entered the house. My mother would probably be in bed. She worked at night in some office building. I dumped my bag and jacket in the hall and walked to the living room. Damn, it really was a mess. Newspapers, empty bowls, cups and other stuff littered the table in front of the TV.
Damn it… No wait, stay positive: “YAY, lets clean up this mess, whoopee” more like that. I started to clean up.
It was an hour later when I finally finished cleaning up the mess. Thank god we had a dishwasher. After that I started cooking dinner. Spaghetti, my specialty. Around that time my father came home and my mother woke up. We had dinner together in the kitchen. We didn’t say much to each other, we all were more of the silent type of people.
After dinner my father cleaned up and my mother went to work. I waited for Kaylee and Jake to arrive on the couch while watching TV.
Then the bell went. I got up and opened the door. What I saw there was weird.
