The plant life that we observed outside the ship was remarkable. Sure we sent probes that came here in the past to see if the planet was habitable, but nothing ever touched the surface till we arrived. Those strange, fleshy plants.
We had assumptions on what could have been. We thought Adaptations would focus on either producing and storing lots of energy, or on utilizing very minimal energy. In the first case maybe they evolve into having large (possibly bulbous) structures to store energy, kind of how potatoes store energy. This, I feel, describes much of the plants outside, and the cause for the fleshly trees we found. In the second case perhaps they grow slowly and flower rarely like some orchid species. And maybe a third possibility is that they have adapted to use moonlight, if your world has a moon or moons that will illuminate during the extended night period.
In any case, the botany and biology Archemedians have lots of work ahead of us.
It is to my understanding that Calloway will be rolling out the Quakers during the next day cycle to clear land. Seems to me this planet has plenty of flora, but I would home there will be no carelessness.
