"He's looking at you again" her friend giggled whispering so the teacher couldn't hear.
Blue peeked back and sure enough he was looking at her again smiling wide. Blue turned around quickly blushing.
"He likes you" her friend said matter of factly.
"No he's just being nice" Blue waved her friend off.
"He told me he likes you and he gave me this to give you."
Her friend handed her a note that read "do u wnt my snaxs 2day yes or no?"
He wanted to share his snacks with her? WOW! she thought to herself.
"What are you gonna say?" Her friend asked.
"What should I say?"
"Say yes he's so nice" she urged.
Blue circled yes with her pencil then went to pretend she needed to sharpen her pencil, so she could pass the note back to him. As slyly as she could she slid the note under his desk. He pretended to be tying his shoe and picked it up. He smiled when he saw the reply.

____________

Just as the note said during lunch he gave Blue all his snacks. He even had a blue blow pop which was one of her favorites.
"Ooooooh!" A small group of his friends teased as they saw him give Blue his snacks. That kinda made Blue shy so she looked away from their direction.
When she was finished she had quite the pile of wrappers in front of her. She didn't eat the snacks alone she shared with her friends, together they had made somewhat of a mess.
"I'll clean it up" the same boy who passed the note offered.
"No that's ok I can do it" Blue said.
"My mom says that's what a man does" he said taking the trash anyway.
"Thank you" Blue smiled. All he could do is smile too.
While in line coming from lunch he passed her another note.
She opened the note it read "r u my girlfrend now Yes or no?"
Blue's mouth was opened wide she was so shocked. What should she say? She heard her dad tell her plenty of times she's not allowed to like boys. On the other hand her mother told her any boy she likes is supposed to treat her good and be nice to her. He was nice. She grabbed her friend out of line and told the teacher they both needed to go to the bathroom. The teacher looked at them suspiciously, they've never been bad kids so she let them go together. Blue practically dragged her friend to the bathroom.
"Geez Blue what's wrong?" She asked when they finally got to the bathroom.
"Look at what his note said!" She squealed.
Her friend gasped when she read the note. "What are you gonna say?"
"I don't know! My dad said I can't like boys but my mom said they should be nice to me and he is nice."
"Well if you say yes he'll have to bring you snacks everyday" her friend didn't know that for sure, she was just making it up as she went along.
"He does?!" Blue was intrigued by this. Snacks everyday?!
"Yeah if you're his girlfriend then he has to do everything you say" again her friend was just making it up as she went along.
"Kinda like my mommy and daddy" Blue agreed seeing the connection.
"Yeah see!" Her friend said.
"Do you have a pen?" Blue asked.
She looked in her uniform pocket, she did have one.
Blue quickly circled yes.
They headed back into class, Blue decided there were too many eyes on them to hand him back the note now. She'd do it at the end of the school day.

_____________

All the kids were having their usual free time before they were picked up.
"Here!" Blue said walking up to him then quickly walking away.
He was smiling while reading the note. Blue sat with her things nervously her friend was already picked up and there was no one else she wanted to talk to about this here.
To her surprise he gave her another note right before being picked up by his parents.
"Don't read it until I leave" he said nervously.
Blue waited until he was completely out of sight to open the note and read it. "I luv u" it read. He even drew a little heart at the end. Blue blushed stuffing the note in her back pocket. Shortly after her mom was here to pick her up.

_____________

"How was school?" Her mother asked on the ride home.
"He shared his snacks with me again!" Blue blurted out.
This isn't the first time her mother was hearing about this boy and his snacks.
"Did he?" Beyoncé asked.
"Yes and mommy he threw away my trash for me at lunch because that's what men do" she said that as if she was teaching her mother something.
All Beyoncé could do was chuckle at her daughter's comment.
"Well that was nice of him Blue."
"He treats me nice like you said he should."
"Well I'm glad Blue" she wasn't taking this too seriously so she just let her be.
"And guess what else mommy?"
"What else?" She asked.
"I'm his girlfriend now!"
That kind of threw Beyoncé off. She was not expecting that. Is this what they do in elementary school these days?
"Wow Blue so what do you think that means?" She tested her daughter curious about what being a "girlfriend" meant to her.
"That he has to get me snacks everyday. Duh!" Blue answered.
She nodded. That answer was innocent enough no need to take it any further.
"Well what about something you learned in school today?" Beyoncé asked changing the subject.
"Well okay if you wanna know about the boring stuff.."

_____________

Jay realized the piece of clothing he just tripped over belonged to his oldest daughter. How did it get in his room? The world may never know. He picked up the piece of clothing and a folded up paper fell out. Jay smiled knowing it had to be a note. He remembered those school days. He opened it curious about what 8 and 9 year old pass notes around about.
He read the note and to his surprise it was a conversation between his daughter and a BOY and apparently Blue was his girlfriend now.
"BEY!" Jay called out immediately. She was the one that said it was ok for her to have boys numbers in her phone so he blamed her for this.
"Boy you better be hurt yelling like that" she said.
"What is THIS?!"
She read the note her husband handed off to her.
"Wow um, I don't know" Beyoncé lied.
"You knew about this?!" He asked he could tell that the note didn't surprise her.
"Blue told me when I picked her up."
"What are we going to do about this?"
"Leave it alone Jay I already asked she thinks having a boyfriend means he brings her snacks everyday" she assured him.
"And what does he want in exchange for them snacks?!"
"Pokémon cards? Jay they're eight, calm down" she chuckled.
"Oh no not my baby" Jay went to go find his oldest.
"Blue! Wherever you are your dad is coming to talk to you about that note you told me about!" Her mother warned as she ran behind Jay.
He spotted her in the backyard on the swings.
"Lefty, what's this?" He asked showing her the note.
"Uh, I don't know" she lied.
"You got a little boyfriend?!"
"Sorry I said yes daddy but he's nice to me like mommy said."
Jay shot his wife a look.
"He may be nice but you can't have a boyfriend."
"But daddy the snacks!" She whined.
"I'll give you snacks!"
"He has the best snacks even blow pops! You don't even really eat snacks."
She was right about that but he'd do anything for her not to need this little boy.
"Blue you're just too young to have a boyfriend" her dad said sternly.
"But I already said yes."
"So when you go to school tomorrow tell him no, Rumi! Come here let's talk about boys before your mom starts making up her own rules for you too."
Rumi heard her dad calling and took off running.
"Come here don't run away!" He said chasing after her.
"Mommy do I really have to tell him no?" Blue asked her mother with her best pouty face.
"Our secret?" She asked whispering.
Blue nodded yes.
"You don't but if your dad asks if you did just tell him you're too young to have a boyfriend." She put it that way because she preached to Blue the importance of not lying and didn't want to necessarily tell her to lie now.
Beyoncé knew this wasn't a big deal like Jay was making it to be. School yard crushes last all of a few days. He'll give another girl his snacks or find a cartoon or toy that interests him more and then it'll be over. Blue will be sad for all of a few minutes then she'll find something else she's interested in. That's the beauty of being young you heal fast.
