"Hey! What do you kids think you are doing!" The school's security guard tapped on the window. I pull back fast and touch my hair a bit. Oliver squirms under me in discomfort.
"Sorry! We will go!" Oliver says pushing me into my seat. I took note of his gesture and scrambled into my seat.
"No! Get to class!" The security guard said trying to pull the door open. Oliver started the car and rolled down the window to talk to the guard.
"Look. It's the last few days of school. Soon we will be gone. We just want to look at apartments." Oliver grinned. The guard nodded and wrote something down on his note pad.
"Do you have a note for an excuse?" He looked at us.
"Um..." I glance at Oliver. He lifted himself off his chair a bit and got his wallet. He filed through his cards and stuff.
"Aha!" He said yanking out a slip and handed it to the guard. The guard, obviously impatient, ripped it out of Oliver's hand. He took a few minutes examining the note and finally nodded.
"Fine. Go." The guard says stalking off.
Oliver starts the car and as we pass the guard Oliver waves to him. the guard rolled his eyes and walked back to his little station.
"Welp... That was akward..." I squirm in my seat.
"Yeah. Uh huh." He breathed. The rest of the ride to the apartment was in silence.
We pulled up to the apartment complex. It looked very clean and welcoming. We both hopped out of the car and met the estate lady.
"Hello! Wonderful apartment. Shall we get this started? Oh! By the way I'm Miss Kat." Miss Kat said very happily.
"Ok." I smile and grab Oliver's hand. Kat turned and walked up the apartment. It was on the ground and near the lot. She opened the door and went inside. Oliver followed and pulled me along. The apartment was small but made for two.
"This is the family or living room. It has nice carpets and the perfect place for couches and T.V.s!" Kat described.
Most of the light was natural from the large window that backed up into some what of the woods. It shone through the blinds and hit me, the soft warm light.
"Wow. This is great!" Oliver said sitting down on the carpet.
"Yes! It is a great choice!" Kat smiles.
"What do you think babe?" Oliver catches my attention. He was smiling and looking so happy.
"I love it! Let's move on I want to see the rest of the apartment!" I turn to him and flash a grin. Kat shrugged happily and gestured for us to follow along into the hallway where we headed for the door at the end. She opened it and we filed in looking at this larger room."This is the master bedroom." Kat says looking down at her clipboard.
"Wow." I say and Oliver lets out a low whistle.
"Well here is the master's bedroom. It has 2 sinks and a bath tub." Kat says showing us.
"This is the mansion of all apartments." I breath. I glide my hand over the sink and feel the cool marble.
"Actually," Kat says flipping through her papers," this is a condo. Look if you can't afford for one we can always-"
"Wait a condo?" Oliver said cutting her off," How much is it?"
Miss Kat flipped through more pages nervously. She finally found it and cleared her throat.
"160,000."
I freeze and this great- I mean perfect idea falls apart. I turn to face Oliver. His face was red of embarrasment. He scoffed and said,"We don't have that type of money. Let's just finish this tour and think about it, okay?" His eyes met mine. I knew the look on his face. He knew we couldn't afford it.
"Okay. Let's move on and if you guys don't like this... There's always more." Kat smiled.
"Right." I walk next to Oliver and pat his shoulder. He shrugged it off and left the room.
"I-I- I didn't mean to upset him!" Kat says breathing heavily.
"I'm sure he's just a little stressed... We are graduating in a few days." I turn to her. I see Kat leaning against the bathroom counter crying. She sniffled and looked at me.
"Wow I'm so sorry you had to see this, it's just that," She turned and looked in the mirror," If I screw this sale up, I'm fired." She brought her fingers to her eyes and tried to rub away the makeup her tears had brought. Kat couldn't get the make up off and she sighed in fustration. She pushed back her blond hair and straightened her pencil skirt. She adjusted her jacket and took a deep breath and faced me.
"Don't worry. We will try to figure something out." I smile.
"Okay." She forced a laugh.
"Come on, I think we have had enough of this house. You know what? I'll take it." I said. As soon as i said it I regretted it. Where will I get the money for this? What will Oliver say? What did I just do? How am I going to get a job and go to college?
"Really? Wow. Thank you so much!" She squealed and pushed her hair out of her face.
"Let's go get Oliver." I suggest. She nods and we head out of the bathroom and back to the family room where Oliver leaned against the wall.
"Let's go. Thanks for wasting my time." Oliver stalked out of the room and out of the condo. He slammed his car door so hard I winced.
"So, Saturday at 12:00?" Kat suggests.
"What do you mean?" I ask and Oliver honks the horn letting me know he's grown impatient.
"For closing the house. you need to buy it buy Saturday."
"But it's only Tuesday!" I gasp.
"Here." She says quickly and puts something in my hand. Her number.
"Call me and tell me a time." She says. I nod and head out the door to Oliver who was- by now- fuming with anger. He started the car and backed of the parking lot to what could of been our home. But the price is too high and I can't do a thing about it. Plus, I said I'd by it. What would Oliver say? That question will haunt me until I say it. Should I wait? I was going to wait but my brain simply went on its own.
"I told Kat I'd buy the condo." I say quietly.
"YOU WHAT?" Oliver said slamming on the brakes. We were going 40 miles per hour. I slammed my head against the dash board and groan. I sit back and brought my hand to my forehead. I brought my hand back down and saw my hand, bright red.
"Oliver?" I whisper. Just talking made my head throb. I felt a trickle of blood fall down across my face. I did not wipe it away.
"Gaia?" Oliver said back. He sounded frantic. He was facing me and in fact he looked worried.
"Why?" I say and groan.
He said nothing.
"Why!" I scream.
"Gaia-" Oliver cried. And just then a car rear ended us. My forehead once again hit the dash board. This time, even harder. Everything was silent. Either that or I lost hearing. Everything got dark. So dark.
