After almost a month of the Captain being gone the children had grown to be enchanted by Maria and she in turn had grown to love them, more than she cared to admit.

They were all dressed in their curtain clothes eating breakfast together.

"What are we doing today?" Kurt asked taking another bite of toast

"Well, you're wearing your dirty clothes so what's something that's dirty?" Maria asked as she looked at the children

"I don't know, but before we go anywhere can we go check on the bird's nest. I completely forgot and there might be baby birds now" Marta pleaded from her seat next to Maria

"We'll check before we leave" Friedrich assured her from across the table

"Marta you just gave me a wonderful idea" Maria shot up and reached for Gretl on the other side of her "everybody finish eating then grab your shoes, let's go"

"Umm this is a road" Brigitta stated dryly

"Why are we on a road?" Gretl looked up at Liesl who was holding her hand

"Come here" Maria said walking across to a tree.

She began telling them about the different types of trees that were along the road. Her mountain upbringing had given her a lot of knowledge of nature and it's life. Brigitta was of course intrigued as she was basically a sponge that soaked everything up. Louisa and Liesl were amazed that a simple tree could hold so many fascinating parts. However the boys were itching to climb it

So Kurt began to climb

"What on earth are you doing" Liesl was startled

"He's climbing" Gretl stated like it was obvious and the others couldn't help but smile at the response

"I'll be fine" Kurt shouted

"You beat me to the real reason we're here Kurt" Maria yelled up at him

"You mean we can climb?" Louisa grinned. If she can climb up the side of her house she obviously liked climbing things.

"Of course, however little ones, I want to keep an eye on you" Maria was impulsive but was starting to gain more of  a sense of responsibility

So the kids began to crawl up the branches. Marta and Gretl managed with a little help. The children all climbed as high as they wanted and soon became mesmerized by the view, so much so in fact they missed the cars passing below (iykyk)

Maria looked up with pride and yelled at them "now look, what do you see? Something different? Something beautiful?"

Maria felt at this point the children were safe as they shared what they saw and so she herself scaled a tree and looked to her left and saw the roof of a monastery, of course it wasn't the same as Nonnberg but it still reminded her of her life there. The sisters, the mother abbess, the gardens, the security. But at the moment she was truly thankful that the reverend mother had sent her out and that God had given her the confidence to face this amazingly rewarding challenge.

Short and sweet. Love to see the dynamics of the kids.
