A few days later the children were in Maria's room in the evening per usual and the typical chaos was ensuing. The three younger girls were playing with Friedrich on the floor and Louisa and Liesl were chatting away happily on one side of the bed. Maria was sitting up against her headboard a bit overwhelmed between wedding stuff and the children. Kurt sat in a chair by the window. He was tired and was wanting some peace and quiet, it seemed sometimes he couldn't escape his siblings. Maria noticed how he looked a little drowsy and brought his knees up to his chest.

The laughter of the siblings grew so loud that Liesl turned from where she was facing Louisa on the bed to the floor "I think you're trying to stay awake little missies" she told the little girls.

"What gave you that idea" Brigitta replied with a hint of sass. Just then the Captain knocked on the door, even though it was open, to announce his presence and when he saw it was okay he walked in and immediately found the two youngest girls wrestling on top of his feet.

"What on earth are you doing?" He asked trying to maintain his composure.

"They're pretending to be monkeys" Louisa said with an eye roll. Kurt looked up and smiled a bit but then retreated back to his book.

Liesl got off the bed and accidentally stepped on Brigitta's hand.

"Ouch that was my finger" Brigitta exclaimed ripping it away and accidentally smacked Friedrich.

"Ouch that was my face" he replied sarcastically. And that was it, it was Armageddon. The fight brewed between all the siblings except Kurt. The Captain looked at Maria who leaned back noticed her eyes were closed and she was half asleep. He then looked over at Kurt and saw the frustration in his face and how he clenched his book.

"Enough" the Captain said firmly. He was kinder, but children have to be disciplined sometimes. All seven heads snapped and Maria jumped more awake and sat straight up on the bed "run along and get ready for bed" he said a bit more gently but still serious and motioned for the door.

Brigitta and Marta scurried out with the oldest three not far behind. Gretl stood and looked at Maria

"Come here, you're the last one" Maria said patting the bed as Kurt was traipsing to the door. Gretl ran to the bed and hopped on and Maria began to brush he hair out with her fingers "Kurt" she spoke without looking at him. He stopped in front of his father and walked back towards the bed and sat next to his sister. He looked forlorn and the Captain joined them on the bed and sat on the other side of his son.

"Are you alright tonight?" she asked sincerely but without looking up from braiding Gretl's hair.

"Yeah" he said messing with the pages of his book.

"Are you sure son?" The Captain asked and received only a quick nod in response.

"Well I'm not sure" his father continued as he pat his sons back.

Kurt looked up at his father with something almost undetectable in his eyes.

"You know Kurt" Maria was finishing the braid "sometimes talking about how you feel can make you feel better, even more than singing about your favorite things." She smiled and looked at him. He looked at her with the same look he gave his father. Maria looked at Gretl "Why don't you go get your night clothes on and I'll be there soon" she said sweetly and the little girl skipped out of the room.

"Its just, I don't know, it's hard to explain, you wouldn't get it" Kurt looked down

"I think you aren't giving us enough credit for what we know" the Captain said a bit cheerfully

"No you wouldn't" the boy mumbled

"Explain it to us then" Maria waited a bit "if you want"

"It's just this, it's so much. It's exciting but nothing has been this exciting in so long and I guess it's just a bit overwhelming. Last time things were this good you left and I know you won't but what if something bad happens?" The boy was afraid to be happy, he didn't want to get excited in case things fell through. It was one of the walls he had put up and was only beginning to tear down.

"Listen to me. I am not leaving, not now, not ever" Maria cupped his cheek.

"And" the Captain leaned in "we are a family, no matter what happens, good, bad or ugly."

"But-" Kurt began and the adults made eye contact with each other over his head with concern plastered on their faces.

"But what?" The Captain asked

"But you told us that when were little after mother and look-" he couldn't finish his sentence.

"I think I better go check on the girls" Maria said calmly reading the situation. She got up and kissed the top of Kurt's head and then kissed the top of her fiancée's head as he held her hand and she left the room.

"Son, I know I can't get any of that time back but I'm here now and just like Maria I'm never going to leave you. I'm your father, you're stuck with me"  Kurt seemed a bit calmer "don't worry I won't ever make that same mistake again, trust me, Maria would have my head on a platter" he smiled and Kurt sat up a little more and sighed as he looked at his father

"You're wrong, she'd put it on a pole" he laughed a little

"You're probably right" his father smiled and pat his son on the back and the two exited the room, together.

Well, another one done. I really wanted Kurt to have some more time since he hasn't really had his bonding moment yet. Not to mention the picture at the top was too darn cute and was great inspo

Hope you enjoyed!💛💛💛
